Microsoft Airband Initiative is working with internal and external partners to guide and shape innovative new products, solutions, and business models that will help bring affordable connectivity to rural areas. The team already has a portfolio of high-impact, high-profile engagements with partners in over 20 countries across five continents. The team aims to (1) develop a pipeline of new partnerships and projects to incubate new approaches, (2) commercialize, grow, and scale existing and new engagements, and (3) develop an affordable internet access ecosystem.
Our Business Operations and Project Manager, Microsoft Airband Initiative – USA will work with the Director, Airband USA to identify and land new partnerships and projects that bring affordable and reliability broadband connectivity to rural areas. The Project Manager will lead and implement a subset of broadband network deployments and service rollouts with our network operator partners, while ensuring that all project and partner engagement processes, protocols, and activities ladder up into global strategy and execution plans. While the Microsoft Airband Initiative team is global in nature and actively engaged in engagements around the world, the geographical focus of this role is regional and involves rural America.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of effectively partnering with a wide variety of stakeholder groups, internal and external, on internet connectivity projects in the United States. The ideal candidate will be a high performing project manager with extensive project management, program management, and relationship management experience, as well as excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
Regional Project Execution : Collaborate with external partners (mainly local internet services providers) and internal stakeholders across the company (Microsoft Philanthropies, business development, state-level government affairs, finance, legal, education sector leads, etc.) to manage and execute rural connectivity projects in support of Microsoft’s Airband Initiative strategies, goals, and objectives. Applies a broad understanding of partners and internal group needs, drivers, and decision-making processes. Plans, strategizes, and influences rural connectivity priorities and decisions to improve partner and stakeholder satisfaction and performance. Develops shared strategies and clarifies expectations for scope and scale in established areas to achieve shared objectives and minimize redundancy.
Partner Management & Project Reporting : Track, measure, and report partner and project performance and KPIs using project management tools on a day-by-day, week-by-week, month-by-month, and quarter-by-quarter basis to ensure that project-level reporting, insights, issues, next steps, and escalation items are available in real-time and as needed. Maintain ongoing relationships with partners to ensure the wider team is constantly aware of risks, opportunities, challenges, next steps, and all information required for tactical and strategic reporting within and outside Microsoft. Forecasts resource needs and timing throughout the course of a project and removes obstacles. Critically reviews multiple plans and adjusts as needed. Proactively communicates and addresses necessary tradeoffs. Coaches and supports partners in planning, organizing and coordinating Airband projects. Implements metrics to drive continuous improvements. Documents and delivers best practices for use across the Airband USA Team. Utilizes metrics and data to anticipate and educate others on partners’ needs for successful projects.
Operational Excellence: Acts as a thought leader in driving consistency in processes and services to align with defined policies and procedures to meet performance expectations for consistency, accuracy, and timeliness of delivery. Uses judgment, subject matter expertise, and proven methodologies to minimize risk and revenue impact. Seeks opportunities for improvement within processes or services and proposes changes or adjustments to plans. Acts on opportunities to increase agility, and contributes to workstreams to evolve processes, services, and solutions for simplification and automation. Develops an impact assessment for change management associated with simplification and automation. Manages change across multiple stakeholders to ensure high-quality implementation.
Business Evangelism: Develops strategic relationships with new and existing internet service provider (ISP) partners, external and internal groups to enhance strong networks and open communications in furtherance of Airband Initiative goals. Actively seeks and creates opportunities for synergies across partner and internal groups to drive long-term solutions and shared roadmaps. Builds a business case for long-term, cross-business solutions that incorporates the impact of solutions and recommends ways to mitigate risk. Drives the development of shared strategies to ensure clear expectations for scope and scale and minimize redundancy. Establishes best practices for shared strategies that set the standard for clear expectations, scope and scale, and minimize redundancies. In consultation with the Director, Airband USA, responsible for development, satisfaction and the health of Airband partnerships. Uses proven knowledge in his or her field to represent Microsoft at industry events and support partner engagements.
Project management and program management expertise with strong attention to detail and analytical ability.
Deep understanding of the operational aspects of the internet connectivity business via direct experience working in and/or interfacing with the U.S. telecommunications industry and/or U.S. network operators.
Ability to successfully communicate with technical audiences.
Demonstrated ability to work in a start-up environment to develop, document, implement, and improve processes, tools, and technology.
Experience working in cross-disciplinary virtual teams with demonstrated ability to resolve road blocks to progress

5+ years of business operations experience in a project and/or program management role.
Telecommunication industries experience preferred.
