Legal Counsel, Europe
ADF International seeks a full-time Legal Counsel, Europe located in either Brussels, Belgium or Vienna, Austria. Reporting to the Director of European Union Advocacy, the Legal Counsel will meet legal objectives to defend freedom of religion, marriage and the family, and the sanctity of life at the European Union.
As Legal Counsel, you are a vital part of the International Advocacy Team. In this role, you will report to the Director of European Advocacy. Legal Counsel will conduct high quality legal advocacy in Europe to win the battle for religious liberty, life, and the family, including marriage. Legal Counsel requires fluency in English and ideally at least one additional major European language. Legal Counsel has familiarity with public international law, particularly human rights law, and is familiar with the processes of the EU, European Court of Human Rights, and United Nations. Specialized knowledge of EU law and EU institutions and procedure would be advantageous.
Legal Counsel drafts legal documents and memorandums, advises clients, and files cases. Legal Counsel will be expected to engage in written and oral advocacy at the EU, ECHR, and related institutions, draft interventions and submissions, work collectively with allies and build coalitions to promote the sanctity of life, marriage and the family, and religious freedom.
Legal Counsel will be expected to draft scholarly articles, present at conferences, and conduct training events. Legal Counsel will cooperate with the Development team, including on speaking engagements and other Supporter events; interact with the media regarding cases and issues, advise allied attorneys on legal issues within areas of competence, network and develop relationships with allied attorneys and organizations, and/or potential allied attorneys and organizations.
Your Essential Responsibilities:
In this position, you will:
Conduct in-depth and high quality legal worki;
Build a growing alliance of lawyers, law students, church leaders, public intellectuals, NGO leaders, business leaders, academics, diplomats, policy makers and law makers to advance the advocacy aims of ADF International;
Obtain clients and lead, join or assist counsel in efforts to establish positive precedents at the highest available appellate courts and institutions;
Draft scholarly reports, white papers, and legal memorandums;
Write and publish law review articles and potentially books on ADF International core issues;
Engage the media through op-eds, commentaries, and quotes connected to ADF International work, as well as conducting interviews on radio or television;
Provide training to Christian lawyers who are seeking to engage with the work and mission of ADF International;
Skills you need to succeed:
Human rights law, EU law, and public international law
Key threats to life, marriage and the family, and religious freedom in Europe and the wider international context
Political affairs within a wider European context
Running successful advocacy campaigns in Europe
Demonstrated proficiency in:
Legal analysis, research, and writing
Alliance-building, networking, and relationship development
Capacity to handle multiple complex matters working with a multi-disciplinary and international team
Public speaking both in a training and persuasive setting as well as the ability to handle hostile approaches
Fluently speak and write in English
Ideally, fluently speak and write in at least one other major European language
Live and work in Brussels, Belgium or Vienna, Austria
Education and/or experience:
Ideally, advanced degree or law degree.
Two or more years of relevant experience.
This position may be a qualified lawyer. However, a non-lawyer may qualify who has a master’s degree or relevant experience, a demonstrated track record of success in building and leveraging diverse alliance relationships within the context of an agreed strategy.
