Summary:As a Game Designer, you will work closely with the Senior Game Designer to move PopCap Europe towards the creation of new and original content based both on existing PopCap IP as well as brand new IP on a variety of smartphone and tablet devices as well as on social networks and other emerging platforms.


  • Manage the design process of one or more (concurrent) title through the entire life cycle from high concept, internal pitch, green light, completed GDD, through development to launch and then post-launch (where the title is to be run as a service).

  • Deliver innovative and engaging designs within the scope of the original IP, the technical limitations of the target platforms and the constraints of the project schedule, all the while maintaining PopCap’s standard of quality.

  • When working with an existing PopCap IP, retain the original IP’s core brand values and game balance/experience during the adaptation process.

  • Where appropriate, define the requirements for, and manage the creation of, mock-ups and prototypes of game play mechanics, menus and user interfaces.

  • Be responsible for clear and concise game design creation and communication with team members, brand champions, and senior management throughout the PopCap organisation.

  • Consider broad, long-term design strategies/roadmaps beyond individual products or platforms; with specific focus on connected and social features.

  • Help build excitement about the game throughout production to the wider PopCap community both internal and, where appropriate, external.

  • Be comfortable taking and using constructive feedback through review processes both internal and external.

  • Provide critique in a fair, balanced and constructive manner; preferably with suggestions as to how things can be improved.

  • Remain current on industry trends including new game genres/types, new game design methods and techniques, emerging platforms especially smartphone, tablet and social networking.

  • Look for ways to extend PopCap’s IP’s to take advantage of platform technologies (e.g. new smartphone devices, tablets and social networking platforms) and emerging game trends including e.g. asynchronous/synchronous multi-player, social gaming and location based gaming.

  • Become a ‘brand expert’ on all PopCap’s existing IPs and continue to stay updated on all new developments surrounding each core PopCap game including new iterations, versions, platforms sequels etc.

  • Help the Senior Game Designer drive the Dublin studio towards unique IP development.

Required Skills/Personal Requirements:

  • 3+ years industry experience in a game design capacity.

  • Game design credits on at least one published title.

  • Broad knowledge of, and passion for, the ‘casual’ games sector.

  • Excellent analytical, facilitation and organizational skills.

  • Strong command of written and verbal English.

  • Excellent creative writing skills including proven ability to write detailed technical design documentation and maintain it throughout the development cycle.

  • Good verbal communicator internally with peers and senior management.

  • Must work well in a closely knit team environment.

  • Observe and analyze user testing and recommend design solutions to improve or fix design features.

  • Able to both conceptualize and implement game ideas using various tools and technology.

  • Good knowledge of smartphone, tablet and other handheld and mobile devices, their limitations and capabilities.

  • Good knowledge of social network gaming especially Facebook gaming.

  • Provide insight and counterpoint to your peers.

  • Be disciplined, self-managed and motivated.

  • Able to multitask and be flexible about changing role requirements or priorities.

  • Proven ability to effectively communicate and work with different employee groups including engineering, other game designers, art, production, QA, PR, marketing release management as well as with senior management.

  • Proven ability to provide and accept critique in a fair, balanced and constructive manner.

  • Ability to create detailed project flowcharts.


  • Previous experience working on social/Facebook games, preferably in a game design capacity.

  • Previous experience working on casual games, preferably in a game design capacity.

  • Knowledge of audio file formats and sound editing software.

  • Knowledge of artistic and animation techniques and graphics editing software.

  • Familiarity with programming language basics.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Visio, basic project management and associated software.

Education and/or Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent preferred but not essential. Past Experience will be taken into account.
