Prioritizes and coordinates ultrasound exams with nursing units, radiologists and physicians. Performs ultrasound exams in accordance to departmental protocols and standards. Provides adequate patient care as it relates to the exam requested. Operates ultrasound and associated equipment with proficiency.
Examines requests and verifies orders on each assigned patient. Refers any questionable orders to the Radiologist before performing procedure. Contacts ordering physician when there are discrepancies.
Correlates prior exams, applicable test results and lab data pertinent to exam being performed.
Records medical history on requisitions as needed for Radiologists.
Obtains medications, radiopharmaceuticals, or contrast materials as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner, authorized/certified technologist, or registered nurse.
Verifies the correct patient by checking the patient's armband and validating proof of identity. Prepares patient for the procedure.
Assists Radiologist in performance of procedures of an invasive nature.
Performs basic patient care functions and informs appropriate nursing unit of any changes in the patient's condition.
Differentiates artifacts from anatomical or pathological structures and recognizes imaging abnormalities. Performs additional imaging as needed.
Operates Radiology computer systems to include entering and charging exams and supplies.
Reports malfunctioning equipment to the Supervisor, Lead Sonographer or Engineer.
Requires moderate to heavy physical efforts in lifting and moving patients, equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds. Work requires walking, standing, reaching, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling and lifting during normal operation. Must be able to read and understand patient orders and technical materials. Motor coordination needed to operate heavy and delicate equipment. Intact sense of sight and hearing.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Graduate from a comprehensive medical Diagnostic Ultrasound Program required. Certified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or registry eligible; If not registered, must be completed within one year of hire date. BLS HCP certification from AHA required. Excellent communication skills.
