What You Will Do
As Ascension continues our Advanced Strategic Direction journey toward high-quality, low-cost, person-centered care for all, the rapidly evolving healthcare environment requires us to accelerate change, engage collaboratively, and work together as an integrated ministry. The Ministry Market Executive supports this endeavor through responsibility for the overall market strategy and performance delivery of a large, highly complex, regionally-based integrated delivery system.
The Ministry Market Executive provides strategic leadership for the Ministry Market. S/he will provide leadership in ensuring the strategic positioning and optimal operating effectiveness for the Ministry Market focusing on growth and the development of Clinically Integrated Systems of Care.
As the key interface between Ascension and the Ministry Market, the Ministry Market Executive provides leadership for the ongoing development, measurement, and integration of strategic, operational, clinical, financial, and Mission-related goals in a manner which ensures alignment between the Ministry Market and Ascension.
The Ministry Market Executive directly manages the Ministry Market senior leadership, which includes the senior operations leaders, senior clinical physician leaders, and other market-specific senior leadership roles.
There is a matrix reporting relationship with Ministry-wide Function leaders for Finance, Mission Integration, Communications, Legal, Human Resources, Strategy, Advocacy, and with Services Subsidiary leaders.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
It is assumed that all duties and responsibilities will be performed in a manner which is consistent with the mission and reflects the Core Values of Ascension: Service of the Poor, Reverence, Integrity, Wisdom, Creativity, and Dedication. These responsibilities include:
Determines overall Ministry Market strategy, including integrated service offerings and approach for the growth and development of Clinically Integrated Systems of Care.
Provides strategic leadership and guidance in anticipating and seizing opportunities for growth within the Ministry Market. Works collaboratively with physicians, community leadership, other providers, and payers to establish strategic and innovative relationships amongst and between groups with an overarching goal of providing high value, differentiated services to meet community needs.
Recommends to Ascension the Integrated Strategic, Operational and Financial Plan for the market, as well as potential acquisition targets/terms and major capital investment priorities in accordance with System priorities.
Collaborates with other leaders in the market in developing a market-wide environment that promotes strategic alignment and growth between all entities and encourages the widespread sharing of resources and information.
In partnership with Ascension’s Advocacy team, provides leadership in the design and implementation of a strategic and integrated advocacy and governmental affairs strategy for the Ministry Market that enhances Ascension’s visibility and communicates its position with respect to the transformation of healthcare.
Builds relationships with state legislators, congressional representatives and local government officials and identifies opportunities to partner with other organizations in influencing legislation.
Provides direction and leadership to the Ministry Market’s philanthropic efforts.
Builds trust-based relationships with and between Ministry Market and Hospital Boards. Facilitates Board member selection; works collaboratively with the Board to shape strategic direction in response to community needs and growth opportunities.
Represents Ascension throughout the Ministry Market to associates, physicians, legislators, and other community interest groups.
Collaborates with Home Care and Senior Care leadership to ensure their broader strategies support the Ministry Market Strategy.
Coordinates with Ministry-wide Function in-market leadership for Mission Integration, Finance, Communications, Human Resources and Legal.
Ensures delivery of Community Health Improvement Plans in response to Community Health Needs Assessments.
Growth and Development of Clinically Integrated System of Care:
Provides leadership to develop, grow, operationalize and continually improve Clinically Integrated Systems of Care in the Ministry Market, including the conceptualization and development of innovative business and care models that align incentives towards achievement of the Quadruple Aim and the identification and development of partnerships for the Clinically Integrated System of Care.
Determines overall needs for the Clinically Integrated System of Care to ensure network adequacy and promote growth; attracts and retains aligned and employed physicians/other providers.
Identifies and develop partnerships with area facilities and community organizations which share Ascension’s values.
Recommends and manages to Clinically Integrated Systems of Care performance targets; determines interventions necessary to improve performance.
Provides leadership and guidance in the ongoing implementation of flexible and innovative physician alignment strategies which foster a commitment to clinical quality and patient safety, enhance patient experience and emphasize and promote the Ministry Market’s commitment to forging long-term partnerships with its physicians.
Champions quality and safety efforts within the Market; Ensures physician practice standards and quality/safety/experience targets are achieved within the Ministry.
Overall accountability for all Ministry Market performance targets and market outcomes and performance. Ensures that market performance is aligned with Ascension’s practices and standards of excellence. Provide oversight and direction to the dyad leadership of Chief Clinical Officer and Chief Operating Officer who are responsible to deliver operational performance meeting or exceeding goals and expectations.
Provides leadership to Ministry Market efforts to achieve balanced performance metrics in a manner which includes indicators related to patient and physician experience, associate engagement; clinical quality and patient safety; Mission effectiveness; performance improvement; and, financial performance.
Provides leadership and guidance in the ongoing refinement and implementation of accountability systems which link individual, entity, Ministry Market, and Ascension goals and objectives. In this context, carefully communicates clear lines of responsibility and decision making amongst system and entity leadership, while laying out strategic objectives and expectations associated with action plans, deliverables, and timelines.
Collaborates with Performance Excellence to define needs and provide feedback on Delivery-wide services.
Ensures employed physicians performance targets are achieved.
Ensures formative development of clinical and non-clinical market leadership. In collaboration with Ascension Talent Management, identifies top and emerging talent to meet present and future talent needs. Participates in the development of emerging talent by providing stretch assignments, mentoring, and coaching.
Ensures differential investment in top talent through retention strategies and succession plans. Ensures positive leadership, virtuous behaviors, and strong talent-management strategies are cascaded through the organization.

What You Will Need
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Medical Degree or Master’s degree in business, finance, healthcare administration, public health, public policy or relevant field required.
A minimum of ten years of progressive, senior level leadership with operations or strategic planning experience in a highly complex, multi-site healthcare organization within the context of a larger system.
A strong commitment to the mission of Catholic healthcare and a personal and professional presence to provide leadership on behalf of Ascension Health; a values driven, authentic leadership style which is guided in thinking, in acting, a sensitivity to the mission and core values of Ascension.
Prior experience in providing leadership across highly competitive urban and suburban markets, with a track record of having met financial, operational and other organizational goals.
A demonstrated track record which includes fiscal management, performance improvement, measurement discipline, an outcomes orientation, and a prudent approach to risk.
Highly strategic: demonstrated track record in assessing a complex, competitive market and in developing related growth initiatives in acute and non-acute care and in partnership with physicians, payers, and/or other providers.
A systems-oriented thinker with the ability to analyze complex relationships and situations, think outside the box, take action, and promote entrepreneurial and innovative approaches to optimize care delivery at the system level and across the Ministry Market. The ability to bring stakeholders together around a vision and a strategy to position the Ministry Market as the provider of choice in its service area.
A leader who strategically, politically, instinctively, and operationally understands physician concerns and issues; the ability to engage physicians around increased alignment, a focus on quality, a commitment to cost effective care, and a dedication to determining enhanced ways to coordinate care across the delivery system: all within the context of a mindset which focuses on population-based care delivery and person-centered care.
