Certified Pharmacy Tech
Under close professional supervision and following prescribed procedures, prepares doses of drugs for delivery from the Pharmacy to patient care areas. Assists with the delivery of these drugs and maintains records related to the dispensing of drugs and drug charges. Provides patient care to neonate, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
High School graduate incorporating successful completion of algebra, biology, and chemistry.
Previous experience in a retail or hospital pharmacy environment preferred.
Ability to correctly read prescriptions and other pharmaceutical requests, to understand medical and pharmaceutical terminology related to the use, form, and strength of medication required.
Mathematical ability needed for compounding or preparing correct doses of medications, measuring drug components for intravenous or topical preparations.
Knowledge of basic chemistry and physiology reactions and combinations.
Ability to type and operate a computer terminal.
Must have Pharmacy Technician certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or other American Society of Health System Pharmacy (ASHP) approved organization or obtain within twelve months of employment.
Work involves considerable mental and visual strain and is performed under pressure of deadlines.
Work requires periods of sitting, walking and standing and may include lifting or heavy pushing of objects.
Works in a pharmacy environment where there is some exposure to hazardous substances.
Key Job Duties, Responsibilities
Under personal supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, and in accordance with established procedures, prepares and labels various forms of oral, topical medication, large and small volume intravenous admixture solutions and certain parenteral medications for delivery by courier to the nursing units. Maintains all required records of preparations.
Fills unit-dose exchange carts with medications for delivery to various hospital nursing units. Delivers carts daily as scheduled and maintains all required records.
Operates computer terminals to continuously update patient profile records of the on=-going medication use, to prepare labels, to print reports and acquire patient/drug information, and to monitor the status and location of the patient within the hospital.
Maintains and replenishes medication supplies in automated dispensing machines under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist or other authorized licensed individual practitioner.
Prepares and maintains files for storage and retrieval of patient (active, discharged) medication orders.
Answers the telephone. Responds to telephone inquires at window, appropriately resolving general service inquires and referring drug information requests to a pharmacist.
Receives all medications returned to the Pharmacy for credit, placing them into the proper storage area in the Pharmacy. Maintains all records of accounting and charging.
Provides assistance in various areas of the Pharmacy and off site, free standing clinic sites as needed to maintain department systems, procedures as well as quality control and performance improvement activities.
Maintains established inventory quantities of I.V. solutions and related supplies.
Replenishes or ensures replenishment of stock in dispensing areas when necessary for immediate service to patients. Records observed stock shortages to the proper book or tracking database.
Replenishes or ensures replenish replenishment of stock in off site, free standing clinic site dispensing area(s) and automated dispensing machines when necessary for immediate and ongoing service to patients. Records observed stock shortages to the proper book or tracking database.
Participates in continuing education and inservice programs as required to maintain Pharmacy Technician skills and certification.
Assists in the initial phase of on-the-job training of Pharmacy Technician trainees, Interns, externs and students.
