This position is located in the Recreation Therapy, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Service at the VA Medical Center in Temple, TX. The Recreation Therapist provides coordinated, compassionate, and comprehensive quality primary care, mental health services, and extended care to Veterans in a timely, accessible, and cost-effective manner.

  • Uses professional skill, objectivity and insight to respond constructively to both positive and negative reactions;
  • Serves as a member of a multi-disciplinary treatment or palliative care team;
  • Develops individualized treatment plans with therapeutic goals and objectives;
  • Communicates within the patient's ability and facilitates therapeutic process and progress;

  • Develops a full range of therapeutic or palliative care;
  • Coordinates the overall plan with the treatment team or palliative care team and the patient's family or caregiver;
  • Develops effective clinical interventions that are consistent with the therapists professional Scope of Practice, Standards of Care and Professional Ethics;
  • Plans integrate specialized recreation therapy techniques with the total care plan for the patient;
  • Provides effective clinical interventions;
  • Documents the treatment rendered and patients progress;
  • Adjusts the treatment plan and intervention strategies;
  • Participates in the procurement of equipment and materials;
  • Performs related duties as required. Work Schedule: Sunday through Thursday 8:00am - 4:30pm. Some holidays, alternate days, an earlier tour or later tour may be required for special events, outings, etc. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized. Qualifications

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT: This position requires a valid non-restrictive Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement. If selected, you must have either have a CDL with passenger endorsement or obtain it within 90 days of employment. Failure to obtain this within 90 days of employment may result in termination of appointment.

BASIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: A bachelor's or higher degree in recreational therapy (transcripts required); a bachelor's or higher degree in a related field involving therapeutic emphasis or concentration that included at least 36 semester hours in therapeutic courses which included 18 semester hours of therapeutic recreation courses and 18 semester hours that include a combination of abnormal psychology, physiology, human anatomy and development, disabilities and general recreation (transcripts required); or are you an employee who is currently assigned to a position in this occupational series as of September 2017, which meets the basic requirements for this position (latest SF50 required).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-09: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in federal service that has provided me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Recreation Therapist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: applying the concepts, procedures, and techniques of recreation therapy; performing recreation therapy programming, completion of assessments, interacting with core team members, developing treatment plans, creating and administering therapeutic activities and safety procedures; creating therapeutic activities, coordinating treatment plans, and completing documentation. NOTE: Experience in activities or programs that did not require application of a knowledge of the concepts, principles and practices or recreational therapy or one of the creative arts therapy specializations covered by this standard and that did not involve the use of therapeutic approaches to maintain the physical and/or mental health or to achieve the physical and/or mental rehabilitation of persons (e.g., Outdoor Recreation Specialist, Commercial Recreation Leader, Vocational Counselor or other diversionary-type recreation specialist positions) is not qualifying for this series. Your experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit.

Or a master's degree or 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education with a major field of study directly related to recreation therapy or in a creative arts therapy field (art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy, or psychodrama) or a major in an appropriate subject-matter field with therapeutic emphasis or concentration. NOTE: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

Or an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described for the GS-09 to meet the total requirements for this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Your experience must be detailed and transcripts are required.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and stretching to set up and take apart equipment and apparatus; lifting and repositioning patients; pushing or pulling heavy objects; leading or directing physical exercise. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity to perform intricate therapy procedures, as well as skill and ability in the therapist's creative arts discipline.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave:Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
