Job Description

We are seeking the Head of Finance for EMEA reporting to the Global VP of Commercial Finance.

The Finance Head will be part of the EMEA Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and will act as a business partner to the Senior VP of EMEA Commercial on all aspects of commercial, strategic and financial decision making. The Head of Finance EMEA will act as a ‘right-hand’ and facilitator, while also challenging thinking in a constructive and value-added manner.

Essential Duties and Job Functions

Supports the ELT in monitoring and delivering optimal performance within the EMEA region, and ensuring all financial risks are understood and managed by EMEA and global Management.

Partners with EMEA regional and affiliate leadership teams on strategic priorities. The head of Finance EMEA will work across multiple functions developing business/operational plans and work with the ELT to drive their implementation.

Drives the region’s budgeting, latest estimate, and financial planning processes, in collaboration with Commercial leadership and FP&A Centers of Excellence. Supports quarterly Close and earning prep processes for the region.

Develops a very broad and in depth understanding of the key commercial drivers across the EMEA region. Supports new product launches by ensuring close alignment between finance teams with head office, regional and country commercial teams.

Plays a key role in the region’s pricing governance within a global framework.

Takes a lead role in EMEA Finance and worldwide CFO Organization projects, as well as in M&A integration within the EMEA region.

Ensures optimal and consistent Finance processes are in place in all markets leveraging the International Finance Shared Service Centre and FP&A CoEs in EMEA and Foster City headquarters.

Works collaboratively with country finance, the EMEA Controller, and International Finance Shared Service Centre to ensure country-level Accounting, Controllership, Tax, Treasury and Procurement maintain robust financial controls and management of risks across markets.

Works with IT, Controllership, and the FP&A CoEs to set the direction for the improvement, implementation and general maintenance of the finance systems.

Leads a team of c.80 through 7 direct reports, ensuring robust development and succession planning of Finance staff across the region. Inputs to talent management, strategic resourcing and succession processes.

Builds strong relationships with key stakeholders across multiple functions at our global headquarters in Foster City, CA, to ensure that they are aware of key developments in and requirements of the EMEA region.

Develops strong working relationships with external stakeholders such as external auditors and tax authorities.

Connects other functions of the CFO Org (e.g. IT and Facilities) across EMEA and represents them in the ELT.

Knowledge and Experience

Gilead is looking to attract an experienced Finance executive ideally from the biotech and/or pharmaceutical industry.

With the region crossing diverse cultures, reimbursement policies and regulatory environments, we are seeking an individual with proven cultural adaptability. The successful candidate will likely have gained experience both at an operational level, such as country Finance Head, as well as in above-country roles. Ideally the candidate will have gained exposure to working within a US corporate environment, as well as experience of operations in the major markets in the region.

Detailed requirements include:

  • BA or BS degree in accounting or equivalent with a CPA, CA or similar accounting qualification. Relevant experience at a supervisory level within Finance Department. Tax, Treasury and Financial Accounting experience required.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, an inquisitive mind, and the ability to work effectively in a matrix organization with multiple functions, together with a positive attitude and strong work ethic required.

  • Strong, proven business partnering mentality; has the maturity and awareness to strike the right balance between facilitating and challenging the business.

  • Results-orientated, with the ability to facilitate and ensure Country GM’s and FDs are best placed to achieve success. Optimistic can-do attitude, but realistic in approach.

  • Must have a significant in-depth proficiency in all aspects of accounting and finance, including technical aspects.

  • Ability to quickly establish credibility with diverse audiences and be perceived as a leader yet be hands-on when necessary. Consistently retains a sense of the ‘bigger picture’

  • Possess an open and transparent approach to working with colleagues, combined with the ability to work and succeed in a non-political way.

  • Proven ability to lead multiple teams and projects to successful completion, with experience managing managers in remote locations.

  • Experience in life sciences, healthcare, biotech would be an advantage, as would exposure to US corporate environments.

  • Preparedness for 30% travel

  • A good knowledge of Oracle or equivalent ERP system and proficiency with Microsoft tools (Excel, Outlook, and Word).

While this role is based in the IHQ office in Stockley Park, UK, significant travel will be required
