The Per Diem HUC will pick up available hours and float between 5 mental health units. The HUC may work a 4-hour, 8-hour, 10-hour or 12-hour shift daily. The Day/Evening shift may include every other weekend and some holidays. Per Diem HUC must pick up minimum of 3 different shifts in a month.

Job Description:


With oversight by the nurse manager/charge nurse, provides exceptional customer service to patients and visitors through welcoming behaviors, effective communication, and information sharing. Independently performs clerical/receptionist functions on a patient care unit. Facilitates communication between staff, patients, families and care providers, and between the unit and other hospital departments. Organizes and maintains unit supplies necessary for daily activities, prepares and maintains patient records, performs data entry into the computerized patient information system. Serves as a resource person to medical staff regarding hospital protocols. Simultaneously manages many activities impacting patient care. Monitors patient electronic record to ensure care is progressing and prevent omissions or delay of order implementation. Provides exceptional customer service to patients and visitors. Performs related duties as assigned.



High school diploma or equivalent preferred.


Previous experience or recent education (within one year) with office procedures and equipment. Computer experience and knowledge of medical terminology required. Previous customer service experience that included personal interactions both in person and on the phone, problem solving and skill in balancing needs of guests and colleagues alike is also required. Education or experience in health care field is preferred.

Ability to respond patiently and effectively to questions asked by patients, family, providers and staff.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a stressful setting with patients, visitors, and hospital personnel..

Ability to monitor the electronic patient record to ensure care is progressing.

Ability to quickly multi-task requests for information or assistance from doctors, other hospital staff, visitors and patients.

Ability to read and write English.

Knowledge of Microsoft Word.

Ability to learn how to use computerized patient information system, addressograph, fax, printer, copy machine, electronic communication systems and other office machines.

Knowledge of rules related to the rights of the patients in regard to confidentiality.

Knowledge of medical terminology.
