Senior Formulation Scientist

The Senior Formulation Scientist reports to the Principal Scientist.

The Senior Formulation Scientist contributes significantly to the successful timely development of pharmaceutical products by carrying out required formulation and process activities.

Catalent in Somerset, NJ is home to oral solid dose manufacturing operations as part of the Advanced Delivery Technology (ADT) business unit. On site we have our state-of-the-art laboratory, clinical, and commercial manufacturing plant for oral dose forms in addition to being the Catalent Center of Excellence for handling Highly Potent Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients.

The Role

  • Conducts formulation development activities in the laboratory for immediate and modified release oral solid dosage forms.

  • Runs fluid bed processes, granulation, tableting, encapsulation and other technologies involved in the product and process development of oral solid dosage forms

  • For assigned manufacturing responsibilities, provides technical support to Operations by establishing the requirements for batch manufacturing and overseeing the execution of any required studies. Available for consultation during clinical or commercial batch manufacture.

  • Provides technical expertise to assigned project teams. At the beginning of the project and at key milestones thereafter, defines the technical activities (technical scope) that meet the needs of the customer and Catalent, in conjunction with the line manager.

  • Designs, and interprets experimental studies intended to provide supporting data or to resolve technical issues encountered during each project. Defines technical objectives and conveys them to other members of the project team. Delegates or executes technical activities, lab work etc.

  • Resolves technical issues and drives the completion of investigations that affect the technical scope, makes recommendations for various options that would resolve the issue, including a preferred option.

The Candidate

  • PhD with 3+ years’ experience; MS with 5+ years’ experience; OR BS with 7+ years’

  • Experience in the formulation and process development of oral solid dosage forms, i.e immediate release tablets and capsules and modified release tablets and capsules and 4-5 years of experience in fluid bed technologies

  • Individual must have a working knowledge of pharmaceutical oral solids processing equipment such as balances, blenders, granulators, fluid-bed dryers, tablet presses, capsule fillers, and/or tablet coaters.

  • Individual must have a working knowledge of pharmaceutical raw materials (i.e. excipients), and their application in pharmaceutical formulations

  • Individual must have a working knowledge of general computer software such as word processing programs, e-mail programs, and spreadsheet programs

  • May direct the work of one or more R&D personnel as assigned.
