General Electric Staff Software Engineer in San Ramon, California

Role Summary:

You will be responsible for designing and programming a small module or a large component and designing a feature, set of features, or whole feature area. She/he will work independently and contribute to the immediate team and to other teams across business. She/he will Lead design discussion in a limited manner.

Essential Responsibilities:

In this role, you will:

  • Work on the Predix Insights Platform engineering team responsible for developing and managing the Predix platform big data and streaming IIoT analytic platform

  • Be responsible for DevOps and developing automation scripts of high performance, low latency, robust, reliable, scalable and innovative IIOT applications and platform services

  • Support a 24/7 live production environments on a rotational basis

  • Debug, troubleshoot, and improve live cloud-based system

  • Work with customers to address their concerns and issues

  • Apply principles of SDLC and methodologies like Lean/Agile/XP, CI, Software and Product Security, Scalability, Documentation Practices, refactoring and Testing Techniques

  • Writes codes that meets standards and delivers desired functionality using the technology selected for the project

  • Build features such as web services and Queries on existing tables

  • Understand performance parameters and assess application performance

  • Work on core data structures and algorithms and implement them using language of choice

  • Drive increased efficiency across the teams, eliminating duplication, leveraging product and technology reuse

  • Translate requirements / vision into prioritized list of user stories and deliver to required timelines and quality standards

  • Proactively share information across the team, to the right audience with the appropriate level of detail and timeliness

Qualifications/Requirements:

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). A minimum 6 years of professional experience.

    Eligibility Requirements:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. GE may agree to sponsor an individual for an employment visa now or in the future if there is a shortage of individuals with particular skills.

  • Must be willing to travel (5%)

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in San Ramon, CA

Desired Characteristics:

Technical Expertise:

  • Knowledge of cloud and distributed systems

  • Strong knowledge of DevOps best practices

  • Hands-on experience provisioning, configuring, managing and monitoring AWS services and infrastructure

  • Hands-on experience creating scripts to provision, monitor, and manage software infrastructure. Terraform, Chef, AWS CloudFormation scripting

  • Experience provisioning, configuring, and managing Spark clusters

  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes

  • Knowledge of Splunk is a plus

  • Experience with complex systems deployment on cloud

  • Experience with debugging and troubleshooting of complex systems

  • Experience with Unix / Linux based programming

  • Demonstrates the initiative to explore alternate technology and approaches to solving problems

  • Skilled in breaking down problems, documenting problem statements and estimating efforts

  • Excellent analytic and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    Business Acumen:

  • Strong problem solving abilities and capable of articulating specific technical topics or assignments

  • Experience in building scalable and highly available distributed systems

  • Expert in breaking down problems and estimate time for development tasks

  • Evangelizes how our technology solves customer problems from a technology and business perspective

  • Excellent presentation skills

  • Good at customer interaction (willing to travel onsite)

  • Multitasking (work on quick and effective shot-duration projects)

  • Good at problem solving and working independently.

  • Attention to detail and thorough. Follows “Accurate on the first attempt” approach. Zero rework!
