Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation is a not for profit corporation that exists to provide medical services, research and education. The foundation provides the infrastructure for the delivery of physician services, and contracts with a separate corporation comprised of physicians and other care providers to deliver the clinical services. This multi-specialty foundation will provide a platform from which new physicians can be recruited to continue to provide physician services in a nonprofit, community setting. The Foundation's vision is to create a medical group that will deliver high quality, market competitive medical services.

The Laboratory Phlebotomist performs and coordinates a variety of clerical, manual billing/crediting, specimen processing, and referral work procedures to ensure quality patient care on adult, pediatric and neonatal populations. The Lab Phlebotomist provides the collection of blood specimens by venipuncture and skin puncture, accessioning, labeling and processing of all specimens in the Clinical Laboratory. The Lab Phlebotomist processes telephone request, registers in EPIC, enters patient and specimen requisitions into the computer, and prepares all types of laboratory specimens to ensure proper handling, storage and labeling, distributes or dispatches specimens to correct testing/referral location.

PRINICIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Service Standards:

  • Consistently complies with the SPMF Standards of Business Conduct policy

Essential Functions:

  • Provides the collection of blood specimens by venipuncture and skin puncture

  • Accurately labels all specimens legibly and completely

  • Ensures that each specimen is processed per guidelines

  • Prepares specimens for referral to outside reference laboratories

  • Assures proper documentation, labeling, processing and shipping

  • Verifies all specimen/special handling requirements prior to collection

  • Store specimens post analysis

  • Establishes customer contact

  • Schedules functions by taking verbal and faxed orders, patient registration

  • Verify and enter orders, generate and review reports

  • Conducts paperwork audits

  • Order supplies and assist in training externs and new employees.

Productivity/Efficiency:

  • Performs duties is a self directed manner with appropriate supervision or direction; ensures that routine and priority tasks are completed within the established departmental timelines.

Qualifications

Education, Licensures and Certifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent education/experience is required.

  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician Level I - CPT I is required.

Experience:

  • Prior outpatient lab experience is preferred.

  • Prior specimen handling experience is preferred.

  • Prior experience in use of medical information systems preferred.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of laboratory operations and client service functions, highly desirable.

  • Proficiency in laboratory and/or Lab information systems is highly desirable.
