Job Summary

The director of advancement will staff and support the Department of Dermatology within University of Utah Health building a robust community of philanthropic support by engaging and involving physician leadership and their care teams. Essential to the success of the program and the impact it makes, the director will draw upon philanthropic support from patients and their families as well as appropriate corporate, foundation, and other interested and aligned funding sources. The director will articulate and execute an advancement plan focused on best practices including goals and metrics, and well-articulated philanthropic priorities, leading to the procurement of private support of the clinical, translational science and research areas of the department. This position works with the staff of the department and the office of advancement for University of Utah Health, the university’s central development office, academic and clinical leaders, department chairs and faculty, physicians, patients, alumni, and volunteers to direct and coordinate all fundraising efforts to solicit and secure gifts of significant value. The director of advancement dually reports to the chair of the department and the senior director of advancement for internal medicine in University of Utah Health’s office of advancement.

Responsibilities

1.Identify, cultivate, solicit, negotiate and steward individual donations in line with an articulated advancement plan and metrics established by the senior director of advancement. The majority of the director’s time is focused on gifts from individuals (including family foundations and donor advised funds); however, the position also may require interaction with corporation and foundation entities.

2.Prepare written proposals, informational materials, endowment agreements, gift illustrations and other materials needed to secure gifts. Participate cooperatively in both University of Utah Health and University of Utah prospect management and tracking systems.

3.Work with the senior director of advancement and other advancement colleagues to develop individual and annual gift strategies to engage cold relationships and move them through the donor commitment continuum to a gift conversation.

4.Coordinate the participation of physicians, administrators, academic leaders, volunteers and advancement staff in fundraising activities.

5.In consultation with the department chair and the senior director of advancement, submit an annual advancement plan and budget that includes goals, objectives and strategies for fundraising. Participate in assessing progress toward goals.

6.Work cooperatively with staff in the office of advancement, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, and the university’s central development office in preparing solicitation strategies for assigned prospects in portfolio.

7.May plan, assign and review the work of support staff.

8.Seek appropriate training opportunities, including training necessary for proficiency in the use of gift planning techniques and partner with the director of planned giving to build a planned giving program.

9.Provide fundraising training opportunities for advancement staff, academic leaders and volunteers.

10.Submit regular reports to the senior director of advancement, the chair of the department, and other institutional leaders as required.

11.Work with clinical department staff to ensure endowment reports are completed on time; research any questions related to the reports.

12.Also responsible for other duties assigned by the senior director of advancement and the chair of the department.

Strategy development will be a key requirement of the position.

Problem Solving

The incumbent makes direct contact with potential donors or foundations, maintains and updates potential and current donor relations within the procedures determined by the University President’s office related to donor clearance.

The major challenges of this position are achieving annual fund-raising financial objectives in a competitive market and creating new streams of revenue.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Communication, Public Relations, English, or a related field, or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Five years experience in fundraising, marketing, sales, business, public relations, annual, corporate or foundation giving which includes two years of budgeting and supervisory experience. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Experience in grant or proposal writing, public speaking, a background working with print and/or electronic media, an understanding of university fundraising practices and personnel management is preferred.

At least five years of progressively responsible experience in institutional development/advancement, preferably in academic medicine, with an emphasis on cultivating and soliciting gifts.

Demonstrated ability to establish, cultivate and steward strong relationships with donors, alumni, patients and friends to build and maintain lifelong partnerships and trust while aligning the donor’s passions and goals with the institution.

Intrinsically motivated and able to create innovative ideas to achieve results. Recognizes and seizes opportunities.

Ability to work independently, problem solve, take initiative, set priorities and handle multiple projects efficiently and effectively. Takes responsibility and initiative to set and meet the goals, objectives and obligations while representing the mission, visions and values of the organization.

Demonstrated creativity, organizational ability, and strong attention to detail. Ability to make decisions in ambiguous situations, exercise good judgment based on information and analysis in a fast paced, dynamic, deadline-driven environment in an organized and professional manner.

Knowledge of the fundraising continuum and related principals and policies.

Knowledge of corporate and foundation fundraising and gift planning vehicles.

Knowledge of physician engagement/grateful patient programs.

Demonstrated competency with a comprehensive and contemporary donor database systems such as Advance or Blackbaud Raisers Edge.
