Under the general direction of the supervisor, the phlebotomist collects blood samples, correctly identifies patients, transports specimens and performs all related clerical and computer functions.

Job Description Details:

Skills, Knowledge, Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.

  • Experience in phlebotomy in a hospital setting preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Meets Health System's Guiding Behaviors and Caring Standards including interpersonal communication and professional conduct expectations.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to competently care for all assigned age groups (Neonate, Child, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric as applicable).

  • Revenue Management: ensures the accuracy of documenting services and supplies provided to the patients.

  • Obtains blood specimens on in-patients and out-patients by venipuncture, arterial puncture, skin puncture, and/or heel puncture on infants using established technique and maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test performed.

  • Assesses condition of patient, obtains appropriate assistance, and uses related judgment in selection of suitable phlebotomy site. Provides care of the puncture site.

  • Instructs patient in proper collection and preservation of urine samples.

  • Adheres to rigid accuracy in using names and numbers for identifying patients.

  • Performs batch and timed drawings on nursing floors as required. Responds to all STAT requests, including Code Blue, disaster, and trauma situations.

  • Establishes priorities for specimen collection.

  • Prepares and maintains trays for specimen procurement.

  • Performs any quality control of phlebotomy equipment to ensure proper operation. Distributes samples to appropriate testing areas in a timely manner.
