The Role: Xylem seeks to hire a Vice President, Corporate Communications. The Vice President, Corporate Communications is a strategic thinker with a global mindset. The position is responsible for monitoring and protecting the Xylem corporate reputation worldwide, and effectively positioning the company as a global thought leader on water-related issues among key audiences, including shareholders, customers, the media, regulators, partners, potential employees and communities where we operate. This involves developing and executing the company’s global external communications/media programs to support the overall business growth targets of the corporation, as well as increasing the visibility of the Xylem brand. In collaboration with corporate leaders and management of the company’s businesses and sales teams, the individual in this position will develop compelling thought-leading themes, key messages, and programs/projects to further enhance Xylem’s reputation in the water and sustainability spaces. The individual will also be responsible for ensuring timely and consistent communications to stakeholders on all issues that are of importance to the company.

Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities:

  • Work closely to build collaborative relationships with the CEO, members of the senior team, and other business leaders, including regular contact with the communications leaders of Xylem’s businesses.

  • Partner with Investor Relations and Finance to develop and draft all financial communications, including quarterly earnings releases and conference call scripts, press releases on acquisitions, key contract milestone and wins, and other financial communications, such as the annual shareholder letter. Monitor all media coverage of the company, proactively build and enhance relationships with news media, and ensure accurate media coverage of the company.

  • Develop responses to media inquiries and serve as primary Xylem contact/spokesperson on all issues. Working in collaboration with Risk Management and Security, develop, manage and train others on Xylem’s crisis communications response plans.

  • Lead a team and a PR agency team to manage external communications, and the creation of relevant content to leverage across internal and external channels. Develop productive working relationships with communications representatives in the businesses to build influence and work collaboratively to ensure consistency of all external relations activities.

  • Counsel the CEO and other members of senior management on important external communications and reputational issues that may reflect on Xylem and/or on which Xylem may have a positive influence.

  • Oversee the development of Xylem’s Annual Sustainability Report and its roll-out plan. Partner with Xylem’s Sustainability team to develop additional content supporting Xylem’s leadership in sustainable practices

  • Direct all aspects (content and logistics) of Xylem’s participation in thought leadership forums, including the Value of Water Industry Coalition, a group of leading industry firms and trade associations working to build recognition of the value of water, as well as Xylem’s participation at key events such as Singapore International Water Week, and will be responsible for determining proposed venues for Xylem participation, and identify and prepare key leaders to represent Xylem in these forums..

  • Partner with other team members to amplify Xylem news on its digital and social platforms.

  • Partner with Vice President, Employee Engagement Communications to ensure that the company’s messages and communications are consistent and coordinated appropriately for both internal and external audiences.

  • Develop appropriate metrics to measure the impact of external communications, report on these metrics regularly and build contingency plans when necessary.

  • Facilitate the sharing of best practices and processes and the strengthening of the external communications discipline throughout the company.

Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities, License/Certification:

  • B.A. or B.S. degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or related field.

  • Ten or more years of experience in corporate communications, with an emphasis on public affairs and media relations.

  • Effective Communication : Proven ability to create and implement comprehensive media relations programs that support a corporate brand and overall business objectives. Excellent writing and editing skills are a necessity, including the ability to write scripts for internal and external audiences. Experience with cutting-edge communications practices and technologies, along with outstanding and creative oral and written communication skills and understanding of social media usage in business applications.

  • Collaboration and Teamwork : Proven track record of teamwork, innovation and results. Consummate organizational savvy, with the ability to interact and influence at all levels of an organization. Much of the success in the position will be based on relationship-building and the ability to manage across a matrix organization.
