The Foods Wet Technology Engineering manager is responsible for development and lifecycle of Foods Wet Technology and design standards that enable improved capital efficiency, reduced operating costs, reduced environmental impact and accelerated innovation, new product introduction, improved ROA and project delivery. The Foods Wet Technology Engineering manager is responsible for process and packaging excellence in Unilever Supply Chain for Foods Wet consumables within the Savoury, Dressings, and Non BCS Spreads categories. Capital efficiency and a keen affordability focus will remain as major considerations in driving Wet technology development.

This role will develop and maintain close working relationships with their respective Wet Technology global and cluster partners in close collaboration of development and deployment of design. The Wet Technology Engineering manager will be responsible for leading teams of direct and indirect reports in the development, management and integration of Wet Technology designs supporting all Unilever Categories.

The successful candidate will possess a wealth of technical expertise gained through deep experience of Wet Technology process and packaging design and deployment, specification development, utilization of simulation techniques and will exhibit excellent leadership skills as a collaborator, networker, builder of diverse talents and teams and exhibits entrepreneurial, end to end business acumen to drive capital efficiency and margin improvement.


The role is responsible for all aspects of managing the Wet Technology Process and Packaging equipment design program including the development of skills and capabilities, the quality and timeliness of design outputs for large, complex and strategically important projects and design compliance to all relevant Unilever and regulatory standards. This role reports to the Food & Refreshments Engineering Director.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Design development equipment specification through level four designs

  • Design management, maintenance and accuracy for the Wet Technology community via the repository of reusable designs, specification documents, test philosophies etc. and community engagement / relationship for incorporation of design Maintenance Preventions and Focus Improvements.

  • Front End Loading Wet Technology equipment design conceptual through front end engineering

  • Front End Loading Capital Estimation support for accuracy of specification and design estimation

  • Leadership of designs through final specification and final cost estimate. Deployment leadership best practice for Wet Technology designs and subject matter experts for design commissioning.

  • Design delivery of new design first deployment for On Time In Full (OTIF) delivery through full commissioning.

  • Leverage internal and external expertise through strategic alliances with global 3rd party Engineering Service Providers, system integrators, Partner to Win OEMs to access world leading subject matter expertise and develop world class Wet Technology designs.

  • Collaborate with Procurement and Supply Planning team to manage the forward buying plan of design equipment.

  • Ensure all appropriate Unilever, external regulatory and safety requirements are incorporated into the designs produced.

  • Specification and development of process and packaging line functional design control strategies to deliver required design standards of process or packaging design performance. Design definition through simulation modelling validation.

  • Facilitation of specialist user groups within the global Wet Technology community and development of an external network of expert.

Outputs / Performance Metrics

  • Financially, robust, validated, proven, improvement in capital efficiency and margin through deployment of reusable engineering designs, tools and methodologies. This will manifest itself through Wet technology Core Range Designs of proven modules, with reduced time in; validation, testing, commissioning, training and lower life cycle cost.

  • Design and Deployment of a Core Range of Wet Technology Process & Packaging Designs that are holistic, scalable, affordable, and fit for purpose within the Unilever diverse clusters.

  • Recognition as Wet Technology as Subject Matter Experts (SME) Partners

  • Delivery of disruptive Wet Technology meeting the business growth and profitability ambitions.

  • Foster the global Wet technology organization capabilitythrough Community of Practices & Technology Platform teams.


  • Professional Engineering Skills (Educated to degree standard in an engineering discipline)

  • Engineering Design Process & Project Management

  • Asset Care Principles and Best practice

  • World Class Manufacturing Early Equipment Management

  • Financial Acumen

  • 5- 7 Years’ experience Project / Design Management experience & / or 5-7 Years’ experience of Process / Packaging Engineering in FMCG / related Industry or gained in an engineering consultancy environment

  • 5 years’ operating in a Foods Category manufacturing environment

  • Deep knowledge / experience of Wet Process and Packaging Technologies – Design & Implementation

  • Leadership and development of team members, direct or indirect reports

  • Attained Professional Engineer Status (Or member of professional institution)

  • First-hand experience / track record of leadership of the design or delivery of capital / technology projects within FMCG environment

  • Proficiency in MS Office – Excel / Power Point and Word

  • Working knowledge on Engineering software - AutoCAD, 3D’s Primavera & Agile (desirable)
