Purpose of Position:
The Open Educational Resources Librarian will collaborate with colleagues in the VCU Libraries and across the university to advance the adoption and creation of open and affordable course content. Responds to organizational needs: By advancing adoption and creation of open and affordable course content, the position connects strongly with the VCU Libraries mission to enrich learning by providing students with day one access to required learning materials and by providing faculty with wider and more flexible options for customizing learning materials that can improve academic success.
Reporting to the Scholarly Communications Outreach Librarian, the Open Educational Resources (OER) Librarian will implement open and affordable course content adoption and creation at VCU through collaborative efforts with librarians, faculty, students, staff, administrators, and the wider open education community. The successful candidate will provide open and affordable course content advocacy, outreach, and education for a wide range of disciplines across both campuses of VCU, the entire VCU community, and the state of Virginia. The OER Librarian will guide faculty in the creation, dissemination, identification, adoption, and assessment of open and affordable course content; create educational resources and deliver educational workshops on open and affordable course content; document open and affordable course content use on campus, calculate student savings, and communicate benefits and impact to the broader university community.
The OER Librarian will actively contribute to the overall scholarly communications program of the VCU Libraries, which includes open access, open scholarship, author rights, scholarly publishing, research data management, and repositories. The OER Librarian is expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Faculty with the VCU Libraries are evaluated and promoted on the basis of job performance, scholarship, and professional development and service.
ALA-accredited graduate degree or accredited graduate degree in another appropriate discipline. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Experience in education or instructional design. Knowledge of current and emerging trends in OER for higher education. Experience teaching a variety of audience levels and applying technologies to support and assess learning, outreach, and engagement. Experience leading a successful initiative involving multiple stakeholders from various units across campus. Familiarity with trends and best practices in open education and the intersection with scholarly communications. Ability to utilize data and metrics to communicate impact. Evidence of creativity, initiative, and flexibility when working independently and in collaborative environments. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience at urban research institutions, HBCU, or minority-serving institutions is desired
