Purpose of Position:
This position is for a tenure-eligible Assistant Professor in the Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness program to begin in August 2019. The Wilder School is seeking to continue its growth by expanding its commitment to its large and successful Bachelor’s, Master’s and Certificate programs.
We seek a tenure eligible Assistant Professor who will contribute to the strength and diversity of our faculty and whose research agenda broadly addresses the field of emergency management. We are particularly interested in persons with research and teaching expertise in emergency preparedness, disaster response and recovery, resilience, and similar topics.
Teaching Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in the area of homeland security and emergency preparedness at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The normal teaching load is 2:2 and involves both in-class and on-line delivery. The faculty will demonstrate leadership in developing techniques to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests. In addition, the faculty member will mentor students in research and professional development.
Research Faculty member must establish a nationally recognized research program with a record of publication in refereed journals within in emergency preparedness, disasters and/or resilience.
Service Faculty member will serve on program, School, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.
• Ph.D. in homeland security/emergency preparedness, emergency management, emergency preparedness, homeland security, public administration, urban studies, sociology or a closely related discipline (ABDs will be considered subject to demonstration of timely progress towards degree completion and the completion of all requirements for the PhD degree before the start of the appointment).
• Record of effective instruction • Record of publication and conference dissemination demonstrating expertise in the faculty area of research. • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Scholarly focus on emergency preparedness, disasters and/or resilience.
