At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to make great consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences that ship in five to ten years. We are currently seeking innovative scientists with experience designing and modeling advanced optical systems for near-to-eye display applications. This is a full-time position and requires an advanced degree in optical engineering, physics, or similar, and a strong background in optical system design and innovation. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic cross-functional team.

Required Skills:

  1. Develop new concepts and technologies for next generation Near-Eye Displays (NEDs)

  2. Modeling and prototyping of critical technologies to drive system performance and to validate achievable visual experience

  3. Research and development emerging concepts and assess application NEDs

  4. Support evaluation and characterization of optical components, and system integration

  5. Collaborate with the larger research team to explore concepts to advance display system architectures and develop display pipeline to demonstrate compelling experiences

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Must be available to start employment on or after September 1, 2018

  2. 2+ years experience in applied research and/or product development of optics or photonic systems

  3. Experience with optics technologies including imaging, illumination, physical optics, radiometry and photometry

  4. 3+ years of experience with laboratory work in setting up of optical systems, experience with methods and tools for fabrication of nano and micro scape structures

  5. 3+ years of experience with design optical tools and methods such as Zemax, CODE V, FRED, or ASAP

  6. Experience with tools and methods for computer interfacing with lab equipment, e.g. LabVIEW, MATLAB

  7. 3+ years experience in design and prototyping of semiconductor light sources such as LEDs or lasers

  8. Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

  9. Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree in the field of Optical Sciences, Physics or similar

  2. Experience with fundamentals in one or more of the disciplines including integrated optics, silicon photonics, MEMS or device physics

  3. Capabilities in polarization optics, optical system design and optical metrology

  4. Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as Applied Optics, Optics Letters, Optics Express, and relevant SIGGRAPH, SID, OSA, SPIE or similar
