Job Description

The PNNL Advanced Lighting Team engages in a broad scope of research related to energy-efficient lighting technologies and their applications in the built environment. Post-doctoral positions focus on conducting and reporting research on emerging areas of lighting science, including the visual effects of light on human perceptions of glare, flicker, and color; other physiological effects of light such as circadian and acute alerting effects; lighting used in horticultural applications; and other related topics. Individuals holding post-doctoral appointments will collaborate with one or more principal investigators of current work, and are expected to directly contribute to one or more technical papers suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Candidates may also propose a specific research topic for their appointment, for consideration by PNNL management.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates should have completed a doctorate degree with a research emphasis in a topic area related to the lighting science and application areas in the position description. Academic disciplines such as engineering, psychology, vision science, and others may be acceptable, depending on the specific research addressed as part of the doctoral studies and dissertation.

  • Engineering or Science PhD degree

  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to fully apply and interpret basic theories, principles, methods, tools, and technologies within one or more of the following areas of lighting science:

  • visual effects of light on human perceptions (glare, flicker, and color)

  • other physiological effects of light (circadian and acute alerting)

  • lighting used in horticultural applications
