UPMC Molecular Genetic Technologist in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC is excited to be hiring a full-time, day shift Molecular Genetic Technologist. This role will be scheduled Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In this role you will perform clinical analyses of patients' chromosomes using in-situ hybridization protocol when genetic defects or syndromes are suspected.
Cleans and maintains supplies and equipment, including performing all necessary calibrations and quality controls to ensure proper functioning of equipment and validity of test results. Monitors temperature of incubators, refrigerators, freezers, and water baths to ensure optimal equipment performance. Ensures that adequate supplies and reagents are kept on hand and ordered in a timely manner. Uses reagents and supplies in a cost-effective manner.
Collect background information for testing/experiments; perform test set-up; prepare instrument, work area, and equipment; ensure validity of test specimens.
Determines molecular genetic diagnosis for patient in consultation with Lead Technologist and/or Lab Supervisor or Lab Director.
Extracts DNA from patient samples and assesses for DNA quality and quantity.
Implement all quality controls to ensure test validity; adhere to departmental safety standards in responsibly handling, processing and testing specimens and materials.
Maintain and expand knowledge base through participation in monthly continuing education.
Maintains records of specimen processing, including accessioning of samples, entering of patient data and results into departmental computer system and record books.
Performs various additional testing for development of new techniques and development of additional molecular genetic tests in order to maintain the laboratory's state-of-the-art technology.
Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
Run appropriate clinical laboratory protocol based on referral diagnosis utilizing proper automated and non-automated techniques. Performs proper calculations necessary to carry out protocols. Correlates data and quality control information for proper interpretation of patient results.
Bachelors degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology (preferred) or related field.
Minimum of one year of college laboratory experience in order to (a) acquire a basic level of laboratory knowledge, (b) acquire expertise in the operation of equipment and the performance of clinical diagnostic testing procedures. Successful demonstration of the completion of the competencies required by the department/unit.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Analytical ability to (a) perform advanced genetic tests, (b) interpret and analyze test results noting abnormalities and discrepancies including determination of causality and (c) troubleshoot and maintain instruments.
Ability to prepare multiple and various routine and non-routine clinical laboratory procedures manually or by utilizing automated and semi-automated equipment including highly sophisticated testing devices.
Ability to color discriminate between various shades of reds, blues, greens necessary for analyzing probe signal data.
Interpersonal skills necessary to appropriately respond to telephone inquiries from physicians, hospital personnel, patients and other external laboratories and vendors concerning specimens, results, and laboratory reagents.
