Business Communications Lead (Senior Advisor) - Cigna Group Insurance (CGI)

Job Description

Role Summary

Cigna is seeking a proactive, self-starter communication strategist to join the business communications team.

This individual will be responsible for proactive, strategic internal and external communications planning to support business and executive communications and key strategic initiatives, coupled with tactical delivery. This role will support and interact directly with senior business leaders across the Cigna Group Insurance (CGI) and Voluntary business.

This role requires a self-starter communications professional who will successfully create and execute comprehensive internal and external communication strategies that are aligned and support business objectives; provide strategic communications counsel to senior leaders; write informative, easy-to-follow employee communications; create internal and external leadership messaging, presentations and speeches; and develop employee intranet content and video scripts. The ideal candidate will also possess external media relations experience and will be comfortable with creating news releases and other external media materials, proactively pitching media, preparing interviewees and effectively managing media inquiries.

Strong writing skills and business acumen, are a must. Previous experience in supporting group insurance (e.g., life, disability, absence management and other voluntary solutions) communications is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepares strategy and leads the development and execution of comprehensive communications plans for Cigna’s CGI organization, including employee events such as town halls and virtual manager meetings.

  • Develops strategic communication plans and high-quality messages and content for key stakeholders including employee audiences, media and industry thought leaders.

  • Coordinates a wide variety of internal and external communication activities and tactics, such as town halls, manager calls, leadership meetings, presentations, talking points, leadership messages, video content, web content, organizational announcements, newsletters, and external thought leadership promotion / PR, among others.

  • Serves as the day-to-day communications partner for the business and its leaders, providing counsel on solutions that help achieve business objectives. Develops strategies and implements tactics to communicate business priorities.

  • Builds strong relationships across the CGI leadership, as well as key partners within the business, and partners effectively with other teams as needed, such as Marketing and Human Resources.

  • Uses innovative communication channels; engages and motivates employees about business projects and priorities through story telling.

  • Works across teams and businesses; ensures appropriate processes are followed and obtains final approvals from subject matter experts, project owners and compliance/legal team.

  • Monitors and evaluates results of communications programs, using specific metrics to track progress and insights for continuous improvement.


  • Bachelor's degree in communications or related discipline and at least 8-10 years’ experience in a corporate communications or public relations agency setting.

  • Previous experience in supporting communications for group insurance business (e.g., life, disability, absence management and other voluntary solutions) is preferred .

  • Strong writing and editing skills a must ; ability to write for a variety of audiences across multiple communication channels/vehicles, including online, broadcast and social media.

  • A strategic thinker with the ability to translate highly complex, technical content into concise and succinct stories.

  • Experience in working closely with senior executives and providing communications counsel.

  • Experience in identifying the relationship between business and communication objectives.

  • A record of success in juggling multiple projects and deadlines, and working in a highly-matrixed, deadline-sensitive environment.

  • Comfortable working with ambiguous scenarios with the ability to pivot directions as needed.

  • Comfortable working in a virtual environment.

  • Proactive self-starter who demonstrates good judgment as well as tact and discretion to work with Cigna employees at all levels.

  • Strong creative skills, including with visual communications, and experience in internal event planning.

  • Some travel required within the U.S. (especially Philadelphia, PA on a monthly basis, if work at home)
