This position is located within the Engineering Department of the Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care system, Omaha, NE campus. The main function of this position is the efficient operation and maintenance of a boiler plant having a total rating capacity of up to 90,000 lb/hr, carrying up to 125# of steam pressure using natural gas with fuel oil stand-by.

Responsibilities

Duties include but may not be limited to the following:

  • Annual tear down, cleaning, repair and assembly of boilers in coordination of boiler inspections.
  • Monitor and operate the digital control system.
  • Daily checks of chillers, cooling towers and associated equipment making adjustments as necessary.
  • Perform a variety of checks, tests, adjustments and troubleshooting on equipment such as boilers, feed water and transfer pumps, vacuum pumps, de-aerating units, water softeners, condensate receivers and all other associated boiler plant equipment.
  • Perform water treatment tests and adjust chemical feed system to maintain proper chemical balance of boiler water.
  • Perform planned maintenance, clean and repair like and associated equipment.
  • Use and interpret instruments such as pyrometers, voltmeters, amp meters, flow hoods, hydrometers, combustion analyzers to troubleshoot and detect system components for efficient and safe operations.
  • Interpret detailed blueprints, drawings and specifications for boiler plant, heating, and components.
  • Monitor the BAS (Building Automation System) and report any alarms or adverse conditions to the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor. Work Schedule: Sunday-Saturday, working rotating 12 hour-day shifts; Shift times and Days off may vary. EXPERIENCE:A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Dexterity and Safety
  • Interpret Instructions, Specifications (other than blueprint reading)
  • Operation of Equipment/Machinery
  • Without more than normal supervision

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements:Requires moderate to strenuous effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending and crouching. Must be physically able to carry out the duties of this position which may include squatting, bending, stooping, crawling, sitting, lifting, and climbing in extreme temperatures.Works from scaffolds and platforms and may perform strenuous work frequently lifting and carrying tools and equipment weighing 50 pounds. Occasionally handles items that weigh more with assistance of lifting devices or other workers.

Working Conditions:Frequently works in confined areas in and around boilers and other mechanical equipment. Work is performed generally indoors but without temperature control, where there is exposure to dust, dirt, chemicals, extreme temperatures, steam, noise and unpleasant odors. Occasionally provides service and response in outdoor areas under adverse conditions. Exposure may cause potential for burns, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises and chemical irritations. Operator comes in contact with hazardous chemicals such as caustics, acids, phosphates, amines, hydroxides, steam, and hazardous equipment. Incumbent shall employ good safety practices and procedures to avoid injury to self, other personnel, and/or equipment which may seriously affect the operation of the hospital.

Note:A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
