Pharmacy Technician


Position Type: Regular

Scheduled Hours per 2 week Pay Period: 72

Primary Location: Skiff Medical Center, Newton, IA

POSITION SUMMARY: Pharmacy technicians are responsible for the day-to-day activity of the pharmacy department. Their primary focus is to provide accurate order entry into the pharmacy system & filling of orders. Technicians work under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy or staff pharmacists who are ultimately responsible for their activities. Delivering of medications to various areas also required.


  • Collect physician orders from nursing unitsregularly.

  • Read, interpret, and enter medication ordersinto pharmacy computer system for verification by a pharmacist.

  • Select doses of medications and placemedications in patient’s bin.

  • Deliver medications to patient care areas.

  • Provide excellent customer service to co-workers& staff of other departments.

  • Process transfers and discharges of patientmedications to ensure patient safety.

  • Follow department policy and procedures.

  • Complete required safety training.

  • Answer phones and transfer calls as necessaryaccording to importance.

  • Ensure that drug items are appropriately billedto various areas or patients to promote financial viability of the hospital.

  • Assist pharmacist in preparing drugs fordispensing. Related activities include, but are not limited to: appropriateproduct selection, compounding, labeling and repackaging with completion ofappropriate records, maintaining an accurate medication profile for eachpatient receiving medication within the institution according to department andhospital policies and procedures.

  • Assist with management of drug stock including,but not limited to, shelving new drug stock (with proper rotation of items),arranging stock and organizing storage areas, documenting the need for orderingitems, etc.

  • Assist pharmacist in ensuring that drug storagelocations are maintained in an appropriate manner. (i.e. floor stock, “crash”carts, Omnicell cabinets, etc.).

  • Assist pharmacists in ensuring that pharmacyinventory is maintained at appropriated levels in a cost-conscious manner topromote availability of items included in the Formulary.

  • Participate in and/or provide support to Hospitalcommittees as agreed upon by committee members and the Director of Pharmacy.

  • Participate in Pharmacy Quality Improvementactivities.

  • Assist in the training and orientation of newpharmacy personnel.

  • Assist in the revision of policies andprocedures as requested.

  • Perform other tasks as assigned by staffpharmacists or the Director of Pharmacy to ensure appropriate workflow orcompletion of special projects.



  • High school graduate or equivalent with nationalcertification or agreement to purse national certification within the first 12months of employment.

  • Attentive to detail and possess strongmathematic skills.

  • Communicates effectively and provides goodcustomer service.

  • Ability to deliver medications, answer phone,multi-task, prioritize, etc.
