Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director, the Manager of Finance will assist in the management of all financial activities by providing a wide range of fiscal analysis and support. Working closely with the Senior Director, the Manager of Finance will review financial activity, the administration of budgets, and provide analytical reporting for the Office of Alumni and Development (OAD). The Manager of Finance will also audit OAD expenses for proper allocation and provide input on financial strategy.

  • Responsibilities

Job Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Designs and implements financial controls to insure the integrity of the financial data integrity.

  • Designs, creates, and formats departmental reports and reviews reports with program directors and senior leadership to facilitate financial management.

  • Responsible for auditing financial reports from Columbia financial systems, to ensure proper allocation and synthesizes findings for review with leadership.

  • Identifies erroneous activity through self-directed review of data and prepares and processes journal entries in ARC (Accounting and Reporting at Columbia) to reflect the appropriate activity.

  • Analyzes financial data to show trends and identifies possible savings or other opportunities for efficiencies.

  • Manages multiple projects and reports by working independently to meet deadlines.

  • Monitors budgets and collaborates with program directors and unit managers to design and create analytical tools for financial management, such as tracking expenses.

  • Responsible for the production and distribution of financial reports, such as budget versus expenditure reports, on a regular basis, as well as produces ad hoc reports for management use.

  • Identifies financial issues through independent review of financial data and works with OAD and Columbia University colleagues to resolve issues and streamline processes.

  • Communicates and liaises with the University’s various schools and/or central service areas to provide updates on changing policies, workflows, and other processes.

  • Reconciles financial and other data with records from internal and external stakeholders, internal systems, and university systems.

  • Develops and implements financial policies and procedures by independently reviewing current procedures with management to ensure the department is in compliance with University policies.

  • Develops solutions to improve current business processes and plans the change management process to review with senior leadership; establishes and maintains effective internal control.

  • Prepares, reviews, and submits budgets for review by senior management and program directors, in a timely manner.

  • Performs other duties, assignments and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and/or its equivalent required. Minimum of three years of related financial experience required. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office is needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong aptitude in report formatting and production, advanced knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet applications and pivot tables is preferred. Familiarity and prior experience with Columbia University environment and systems, such as ARC and FinSys, is preferred.

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communications skills and active listening skills, including a high level of attention to detail. Must be able to problem-solve and troubleshoot, in addition to the ability to work independently in a dynamic team environment. Demonstrated ability to effectively partner with a diverse group of administrators. Must be able to negotiate issues, resolve problems and have strong influencing skills. The successful candidate must be a strategic thinker, effective in moving strategic agendas, politically savvy and, ensure the utmost discretion in all matters. As well as possess an ability to work well with all levels of management throughout the university. Individual must be flexible in nature, have a sound judgment with a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and cooperation amongst the entire organization. Must have a passion for excellent customer service and commitment to exceptional quality.
