Position Summary

The Major Gift Officer identifies, cultivates, and solicits alumni and friends of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Columbia College and the Arts & Sciences with the capacity to make gifts in the $100,000 to $5,000,000 range. The Major Gift Officer is responsible for moving a portfolio of 150 prospects through the complete giving cycle: validation, engagement, cultivation, solicitation, gift negotiation and stewardship, and serves as a key member of a dynamic fundraising team. Columbia University is in the midst of a $5 billion fundraising campaign of which the Arts and Sciences development unit is responsible for raising resources in support of endowed scholarships, fellowships and professorships, as well as unrestricted and restricted current use purposes. The Major Gifts team plays a central role in the Arts and Sciences campaign, collaborating with University officials, faculty, campaign volunteers, and colleagues throughout the Alumni and Development community. The Major Gift Officer, Arts & Sciences will be reporting in the Office of Alumni and Development to the Executive Director of Major Gifts, Arts & Sciences.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conducts a minimum of 150 personal visits annually to cultivate and solicit prospects and close gifts. Completes a minimum of 15 major gifts asks, 25 leadership annual fund asks and 10 planned giving conversations on an annual basis.

  • Identifying, cultivating and soliciting alumni, parents and friends of 2 schools in the Arts and Sciences: The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Columbia College.

  • Acts as the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences’ liaison to all development professionals within the Office of Alumni and Development, including, but not limited to, other Major Gift Officers within the Arts & Sciences, members of the Principal Gifts, University Development and Planned Giving teams

  • Works in a highly collaborative environment, members of the Major Gifts team have opportunities to engage with faculty, participate in project teams, and manage volunteers.

  • Officers may be asked to perform related tasks, as needed. Major Gift portfolios include both New York and regional assignments involving travel.

  • Individual must be self-motivated, well-organized and collegial partners, and, above all, persuasive advocates for Columbia University's priorities.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum 5-7 years’ related experience, preferably in fundraising or related transferable experience with demonstrated success in annual or capital giving or applicable ability. Microsoft Office is a must, particularly in Excel and PowerPoint. This position requires evening and weekend work and travel as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree desirable. Preference given to candidates with a documented record of successfully closing gifts within or near the range of gifts expected from the incumbent. Experience with higher education fund-raising also preferred.

Other Requirements

Excellent writing and communication skills, tact, sensitivity and mature judgment are required. Must be professional, organized, creative and efficient, able to work successfully both individually and as part of a team
