POSITION SUMMARY: The phlebotomist performs a variety of venipuncture techniques and collects blood specimens from patients in support of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Accurately orders, collects, transports and processes all specimens for laboratory testing. The phlebotomist is also responsible for retrieving and delivering all specimens which are delivered to the laboratory. Other duties include supply stocking, scanning of documents for EMR and clerical duties.
• Performance of Venipuncture and Skin Puncture: Performs venipuncture and skin puncture in accordance with department SOP. Rarely requires assistance in performing venipuncture and skin puncture on the first attempt. Performs venipuncture and/or skin puncture on patients with no more than 2 attempts.
• Specimen Management: Monitors collection list and document status of outstanding collections where specimens are not collected. Ensures that STAT specimens are delivered to the Lab within 15 minutes of collection or pick up. Ensures that specimens are updated to receive status. Ensuring that correct data in relation to collect date/time and receipt date/time is entered. Delivers to the appropriate Lab Section immediately upon receipt.
High School diploma or equivalent AND graduate of phlebotomy training program, and/or pass certification exam--as evidence by possession of Clinical Laboratory Profession--Phlebotomist or Lab Assistant.
Heart Saver or Basic Life Support certification that follows the guidelines of the AHA.
Clinical Laboratory Profession-Phlebotomist or Lab Assistant.
