Chemistry is the intellectual home to over 250 students, post-docs, and faculty members working in a wide range of specializations, as well as the interdisciplinary fields of chemical biology, structural biology, molecular toxicology, materials chemistry, and nanotechnology. Close collaboration with the School of Medicine, School of Engineering and other departments within the College of Arts and Science-particularly the departments of biological sciences and physics--provides valuable opportunities to not only excel in the traditional disciplines of chemistry but also investigate the many ways that chemistry intersects with other fields.

Responsible for budget development, administration of personnel functions, general guidance and assistance for staff, often performing in a liaison capacity.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Define and achieve financial targets for theChemistry Department, consistent with the departmental financial plan

a. Assist Administrative Officer by participating in planning and budget preparations and communicating budget calendar and process

b. Aid in the implementation, interpretation and presentation of annual wage and salary plan to staff

c. Supply precise information by project and account line regarding anticipated expenses for budget preparation

d. Frequently prepare ad hoc financial and budget reports

e. Exercise judgment and prepare supporting or correcting documentation as deemed appropriate

2. Develop and manage departmental personneladministration

a. Assist in defining the qualifications and performance expectations for all staff positions through the Performance Development system, including department specific job descriptions and measurable performance standards

b. Process faculty, postdocs and teaching assistant’s appointments and promotions

c. Assist with international visitor’s appointments, export control, visa issuance/changes

3. Manage chemistry facilities

a. Assist with construction planning, renovations and teaching lab maintenance

b. Participate in Chemistry safety committee

c. Manage chemistry chemical database development/oversight

d. Manage capital equipment inventory, assist asset management with inventory audits

e. Manage space survey for the Chemistry department

4. Develop, coordinate administrative and supportfunctions within the Chemistry department:

a. Preparation of academic year teaching schedule with DGS/DUS

b. Academic Calendar

c. Provide financial support for Chemistry Recharge Centers

d. Prepare/Assist with ACS annual and 5-year reports, NSF annual report, CCR annual report, tax reports, annual space report and grant application/renewal archival data for training grants

5. Other duties as needed

Profile of an IdealCandidate:

  • Bachelor's degree and 3 yearsof experience or the equivalent is required.
