Category Manager

The Category Manager will be responsible for leading Category Captain responsibilities within a defined Category at Target. This individual will be responsible for analyzing various data sources, identifying business insights, recommending solutions that drive profitable category growth, and executing POG building with Target. The Category Manager will work closely with the Buyer on key initiatives such as planning cycles, line reviews, key season execution, etc. to develop and grow total category sales. Leveraging syndicated data, shopper and consumer insights, category and industry trends, Category Manager will develop comprehensive category growth strategies focused around shopper centricity, enabling greater sell-thru and market share gains. This position works as a strategic thought leader, imparting knowledge of the category to drive profitable business results. Duties and responsibilities include the following:

Extensive Category Understanding

  • Act as subject matter expert in assigned category and provide thoughtleadership to Target Buyer, Planner, DMM, etc.

  • Leverage learnings from cross functional counterparts (e.g. CategoryStrategy, Consumer & Shopper Insights, Trade Marketing, etc.) and use todeliver impactful recommendations to Buyer

  • Knowledgeable about Market, Channel & Customer performance at theCategory, Manufacturer, Brand and Product Line level

  • Understand category purchase drivers, trip missions, shopper need states,etc.

Reporting and Data Analysis

  • Generate reporting/scorecards and provide insights, identify actionable opportunitiesand deliver solutions that drive profitable category growth

  • Direct and perform ad-hoc analysis across a wide variety of retail businessdevelopment issues and make recommendations to Buyer

  • Contribute to the line review process, make recommendations on range,category space allocations and develop POGs using space planning software

  • Develop presentations and present to buyer and key stakeholders (e.g.business reviews, line reviews, product/segment deep dives, shopper insights,etc.)

  • Leverage technology to visually tell compelling category growth stories (e.g.virtual reality, heat mapping, etc.)

Multi-channel Experience

  • Provide insight and perspective of the various channel dynamics

  • Monitor channel shifting and the associated trends reflected in themarketplace

  • Form perspective on multi-channel purchasing behaviors (e.g. site to store,store to site, etc.)

  • Understand how online purchase behaviors differ from those in-store and howto capitalize on the differences

Shopper Understanding

  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of data (e.g. Shopper Research, POS,loyalty card information, registry, etc.) into actionable insights

  • Use knowledge of shopper and consumer to recommend optimal category ranges,flows, adjacencies, cross merch opportunities, etc.

  • Build in-store category innovation into all category leadership discussions(e.g. aisle reinvention, store of the future, disruptive merchandising strategies,etc.)

Project Management

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines

  • Manage flow of information and requests from Buyer, Sales and Trade teams,Business Segments, etc.

  • Ability to prioritize and resource projects effectively

Additional Skills

  • Strong familiarity with Target proprietary tools (POL, MerchIQ, DOMO)

  • Ability to build strong sustainable business relationships at all levels andfunctions of the organization and with customers and customer teams

  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal

  • Direct and perform analysis across a wide variety of category business issuesand make fact based recommendations

  • Must be able to link business objectives with winning growth strategies

  • Convey complex issues brilliantly with excellent communication andpresentation skills

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor'sdegree (emphasis in business/marketing or related field)

  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience working with a leading CPG company inCategory Management, preferably as Category Captain on major retailer

  • 5-7 years of experience working with a leading CPG company (CategoryManagement, Sales, Trade Marketing, Shopper Insights or related position)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Category Management philosophies, tools andprocesses and proven record of success

  • Demonstrated success in leading Category Management (Category Captain)engagements with a major retailer

  • Strategic thinking, self-starter with ability to manage multiple projectssimultaneously with aggressive deadlines

  • Ability to work and thrive in a matrix organization, working with crossfunctional teams and global counterparts

  • Advanced analytical skills and computer software proficiency (e.g. Excel,Access, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.)

  • Strong familiarity with syndicated data, measures and software (e.g. Nielsen,IRI, dunnhumby, etc.)

  • Proficiency with space management principles and software (e.g. JDA,Prospace, Spaceman, etc.)

  • 10-20% travel
