The Engineering Team Lead – Vehicle Dynamics is responsible for achieving the vehicle team's functional objectives, determine appropriate targets, lead ride, handling, and steering development of vehicles.

This individual will work with a cross functional teams and serve as a lead engineer to specify components for tires, steering, and suspension in order to meet program performance targets through objective testing, and subjective methods.

This position offers the challenge of varied assignments to highly trained and experienced professional engineers who have demonstrated personal knowledge and ability through accomplishments on previous assignments.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Diagnosis and solution of product Ride/Steering/Handling issues and developing new test techniques and procedures and guiding lower classifications and mechanics.

  • Coordinate and perform a selected variety of functional engineering assignments;

  • Performing Subjective and Objective Ride/Steering/Handling

  • Execution and documentation of development activities and presentation of results to senior management

  • Guiding mechanics and technicians as they prepare vehicles for Ride/Steering/Handling development activities

  • Diagnosing and solving vehicle product Ride/Steering/Noise issues

  • Supporting product development teams by providing overall test results and status

Provides technical and analytical support to Product Development Engineering. May provide direction and guidance to less experienced team members. Refers problems that cannot be resolved to the next level. Serves as a central resource with design, process, manufacturing, test, quality and marketing as the product(s) move to production and distribution. Involvement may last throughout all stages of a product’s lifecycle including modifications, upgrades and maintenance of the product or product line.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 5 years experience in product design/development

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 3 years experience in product design/development

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • PhD in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

  • Qualified candidates, excluding current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. Navistar does not anticipate providing employment related work sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B status)

  • Ability to travel overnight 30 to 40%

Desired Skills:

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field

  • Previous experience in Automotive ride and handling development

  • Data acquisition and data processing skills

  • Strong understanding of vehicle dynamics theory and application

  • Heavy and medium duty truck product knowledge and ability to influence product design

  • Experience with analytical modeling of physical systems

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)

  • Demonstrated initiative and persistence in problem solving

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Experience in PC based software (Word, Excel, and Project)

  • 3 years of relevant experience in steering/suspension/tire release & development or vehicle dynamics development

  • Ability to lead and proven team building skills

  • Vehicle ride and handling subjective evaluation experience

  • Strong understanding of automotive steering and suspension components and function
