Job Description

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is recruiting a n Equipment Repair Technician for the District Equipment Shop location. This technician will promote and practice safe work habits while performing diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and rebuilding tasks on light, heavy duty, and diesel trucks, and road construction /maintenance equipment (such as backhoes and snowplows), and hydraulic systems (such as pumps and valves), and electrical components. Will use specialized equipment and tools such as laptop-based diagnostic equipment, digital multimeter, and handheld scan tools (such as a Tech II). Will diagnose and repair differentials, transmissions, A/C, pneumatic, and electrical systems. Will perform heating, cutting, welding, and fabrication of components. Will prepare daily time cards with charges and description of tasks performed, and maintain records according to established guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience with inspecting, troubleshooting, and methods of repairing and adjusting a diversity of light, medium and heavy duty equipment; knowledge of the functional requirements and capacities of various types of heavy equipment and repair shop equipment; skill in using electronic diagnostic testing equipment; and knowledge of welding, cutting, and fabrication operations. Ability to read, comprehend, and apply information from service and equipment manuals. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, and to record and maintain detailed work orders and service records in computer system. CDL or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter. State Vehicle Inspection License or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Approved safety shoes required.

Preferred Qualifications

ASE and welding certifications. Current State Vehicle Inspection License. Current CDL or CDL Learner’s Permit at time of hire preferred. Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Special Requirements

Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 30 lbs. CDL must be attained within 6 months of employment, and State Vehicle Inspection License within 12 months of employment.

Valid Driver’s License. Fingerprint based background check, references, work history, and DMV records check will be conducted. Position requires approved safety shoes. DOT-required medical exam and drug screen for CDL drivers.

This position is designated as essential and as such, all duties associated with this position are required during emergency situations, which may include, but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations, at times outside of normal working hours. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required.
