The Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) invites applications for a laboratory technician position. The selected candidate is expected to participate in scientific activities including genotyping, PCR, coordination with other high throughput labs for genome-wide association, DNA methylation or expression analyses and general laboratory and data management. Primary tasks will also include sample processing and storage for many types of biospecimens for large population cohorts. This is an opportunity to work with world-class investigators fromtwo closely integrated Centers at USC: the Southern California Environmental Health Sciences Center (SCEHSC), a research center funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and theMaternal and Developmental Risks from Environmental and Social Stressors (MADRES) Center,a research center funded by the NIEHS, NIMHD and the EPA.The SCEHSC houses one of the leading research groups in environmental epidemiology and biostatistics, with a particularly strong reputation in respiratory and metabolic diseases as well as methodological research in environmental and genetic epidemiology. The MADRES Centeris investigating the role of prenatal environmental exposures and social determinants of the development of childhood obesity as well as other metabolic and respiratory health outcomes. The selected candidate will also be expected to participate in local research activities related to the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program.
Specific responsibilities will include the following:
Sample processing for biospecimens such as blood, hair, nails, urine
Maintains accurate records of procedures used to conduct experiments
Maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment
Primer design and PCR, genotyping and expression assays
General quality control and assurance for laboratory assays
Maintains computer-based databases of sample inventory, experimental designs and data output
The ability to work evenings and/or weekends is required. The applicant must have a BS in life sciences, molecular biology, genetics or closely related field. One year post-graduate experience preferred. The applicant should have experience in DNA sample preparation, PCR, and genotyping techniques.
Minimum Education: High school or equivalent, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

Minimum Field of Expertise: Ability to follow detailed instructions, oral and written
