The University of Southern California’s Integrated Media Systems Center (USC IMSC), located in Los Angeles, California, invites applicants for a postdoctoral researcher position under the supervision of Prof. Cyrus Shahabi. This will be a fixed-term position for the duration of two years starting May 2019.
IMSC blends the unique resources available across the University of Southern California and Los Angeles to create a world-class, multidisciplinary hub for exploration and discovery. We engage a diverse faculty with expertise in fundamental research areas critical to every aspect of data science and are closely connected to the domain experts applying these tools through our affiliated schools and organizations. IMSC is built to deliver next-generation, custom-built data platforms based on bleeding-edge basic and applied research. These end-to-end solutions span the entire data pipeline, from the acquisition of real-world data to the application of mined insights and are created for partners with applications with societal impacts across the globe. See: https://imsc.usc.edu/
In particular, we have a long history of applying novel approaches to solve transportation problems. Under contract with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA-Metro), IMSC has been continuously collecting massive transportation datasets from LA County road networks since 2011 (more than 20,000 traffic sensors and GPS data from thousands of buses as well as thousands of incident reports collected by the California Highway Patrol). These real-world, raw datasets enabled fundamental research in Spatial Data Management, Machine Learning and Privacy, which was funded by NSF, CalTrans, and several industry partners (Microsoft, Google, Oracle, Intel). IMSC seeks a talented, self-motivated postdoctoral researcher on Big Data management and analytics focusing on the problems and datasets in the transportation domain. Example of transportation datasets include streaming data from stationary traffic sensors and trajectory data from moving objects. The postdoctoral researcher will be developing computer algorithms and systems, running scientific experiments with large real-time and historical datasets, preparing manuscripts for publications, and help in writing proposals, all in collaboration with students and researchers at IMSC.
A successful candidate for this position will have 1) a PhD degree in Computer Science or a related field, 2) a strong track record in publications and development of scientific software and systems in Big Data management and analytics, and 3) experience in leading and managing software development projects. The desired technical skills include experience with: 1) Python, 2) Spark (and SparkML), 3) PostgreSQL (and PostGIS), and 4) QGIS/Esri ArcMap; experience with additional machine learning toolkits such as TensorFlow or Keras is a bonus.
