Director Of Finance and Accounting

The Role: Blavity is looking for a full-time Director of Finance and Accounting. You will be a leader on the Blavity team, reporting directly to the C-Suite to manage the daily financial operations and long-term strategic financial planning of a dynamic and fast-growing digital media business. The role is based in Blavity?s office in Downtown Los Angeles.

Blavity was founded in 2014 around a simple idea: Enable Millennials of Color to tell their own stories. Today, we average 3-5 Million monthly unique visitors, generate 30 Million monthly social impressions, and distribute our message across all major social media platforms, as well as through events and conferences throughout the year. We are looking for someone:

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Executive Team and department heads advising on strategy, reporting, and budgeting

  • Collaborate with Management on financial planning and analysis programs

  • Own the primary financial model of the company upon which key decisions are made\

  • Prepare financial materials for external stakeholders (e.g., Board of Directors, potential investors) that align with company strategy

  • Compare financial forecasts to actual financial performance, interpret results and variances, and give guidance on necessary course corrections

  • Team building, mentoring & supervision

  • Manage monthly close process including general ledger review, journal preparations, and analysis and reconciliation of P&L and Balance Sheet accounts

  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash flow management

  • Lead bookkeeping, accounting, and taxes for the company at both the company and segment levels

  • Identify and report on performance indicators and other operating metrics

  • Manage and present monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements to the Senior Management team

  • Manage the budgeting process and create variance reports

  • Reviewing all finance, accounting, and HR-related procedures with an eye for improvement

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor?s degree in finance, accounting, or business; CPA preferred; MBA is a plus

  • 4+ years of experience in a public accounting firm and/or a fast-growing start-up preferred

  • Previous media experience is preferred

  • Understanding of accounting principles and GAAP

  • Fluent in financial modeling, accounting, Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets and highly proficient in PowerPoint

  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Experience managing teams of 3-6 people

  • Strong project management & collaboration skills
