The Health Technician (Dietetic) is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center (VAMC) in the Nutrition and Food Service Department. The primary purpose of the Clinical Dietetic Technician is to provide basic nutrition screening and nutrition evaluation of patients in assigned area.

Responsibilities

The duties of the Health Technician (Dietetic) may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assists and provides technical and clinical support to the clinical dietitians by collecting data from the computerized medical record such as patient's medical diagnosis, pertinent medications, diet order, physical, and laboratory data to screen and determine patient's level of nutrition care based on the nutrition care process for assigned patients.
  • Evaluates and uses data obtained in patient interview and review of computerized medical record to develop and adjust the patient meal plan to optimize patient food intake and/or provides this information to the clinical dietitian as indicated.
  • Conducts nutritive intake studies by checking patients' actual intake, determining portions consumed, and obtaining nutritive content of the foods consumed. This information is documented in the medical record and/or provided to the clinical dietitian as needed.
  • Conducts meal rounds to observe patients' acceptance, tolerance, feeding difficulties, and/or compliance to prescribed diet. This information is provided to the clinical dietitians and/or interdisciplinary treatment team members. The clinical dietetic technician uses this information to adjust the diets and/or meal patterns of assigned patients.
  • Conducts individual and/or group education on normal nutrition, weight management, food/drug interactions, and other modified diets as assigned.
  • Serves on the interdisciplinary treatment team as needed/assigned.
  • Participates in System Improvement by collecting data for patient satisfaction surveys and tray accuracy reports. Serves on medical center committees as assigned.
  • Enters select menus into "Computrition" for assigned patients.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/28/2018.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note:Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: knowledge of human nutrition requirements in health and disease and principles of medical nutrition therapy in disease processes, skill in collecting data, knowledge of the nutritional requirements and problems associated with the aging process, skill to screen and evaluate for effects of aging on functional and physical abilities, ability to adjust meal plans based on requirements, problems, and other factors, skill in basic computer technology, and knowledge of medical terminology. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements:The work involves sedentary activities, such as computer processing/typing, reading, and phone calls in an office setting, as well as frequent and/or prolonged standing while interviewing patients, and walking to areas throughout the medical center.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
