Intercept is an innovative global biopharmaceutical company, headquartered in the US. As part of our continued growth, we have an exciting newly created position for a Director of Market Access, UK & Ireland to join us on an initial 6-12 month contract basis, as we prepare for a possible launch for NASH.

Based in our UK & Ireland affiliate office in Central London, the Director of Market Access position is an important role. We are looking to appoint an exceptional market access leader who will be accountable for Intercept’s market access plans for NASH in the UK & Ireland and will be expected to advise and participate in the formation of the Global market access strategy. The Director of Market Access will be a key member of the brand team, providing strategic input for the development and support of the brand, and will ensure Market Access is seamlessly embedded in the local brand and development teams and their strategic and operation plans through developing and tracking performance against agreed KPI metrics for access, developing and tracking Market Access budgets with regional leadership.

This role will best suit someone who understands how to accelerate access for patients in both orphan diseases and broader use specialist medicines. As such, the Director of Market Access must be able to think strategically about how to help Health Systems plan for access to therapies which could have a significant public health benefit. Furthermore, this individual should possess the drive and vision to positively challenge accepted access norms to accelerate Intercept’s ability to address significant unmet need for patients.

This role will demand an ability to work in a highly operational manner, although there will be an expectation of insightful thought leadership, particularly when considering budget planning, forecasting and future growth.   • Develop & implement the optimal UK & Ireland market access strategy for Intercept:

  • Build credible and science led relationships with key stakeholders (payer & clinical) who share the objective of accelerating access to patients in Liver Disease. Must be focused externally.

  • Develop & implement Market Access strategy aligned to the global strategy.

  • Ensure that all Market Access activities comply with the UK/Irish law & Intercept corporate policies and procedures.

  • Work with medical affairs on the development & implementation of patient access programmes pre and post marketing authorization to ensure access to patients in urgent need.

  • Develop, gain global approval & implement the UK & Irish pricing strategy (including innovative contracting options)

  • Develop robust P&R dossiers & health economic models for submission to all UK & Irish HTA bodies

  • Manage the P&R process in the UK & Ireland from the scoping phase to reimbursement through active engagement with all relevant agencies across the UK & Ireland to ensure national level reimbursement of obeticholic acid

  • Develop tools to support commercial teams with local access

  • Identify and ensure the generation of additional data required to support P&R

  • Identify & recruit resources (internal &/or external) required to implement the market access plan

  • Work with medical affairs to develop country specific publication plan to support the implementation of the market access strategy.

  • Ensure Leadership Team is fully informed on major policies affecting access to Intercept’s innovation.

  • Work with Intercept colleagues to develop a plan for Policy maker & Patient Group engagement

  • Lead the development of new commissioning pathways and drive health economy change recognizing this is a “new market” so Intercept must lead the change.

  • Contribute to the development of the International market access team

  • Key contributor to the International market access team who will define the overall access market access strategy. Expected to meet monthly.

  • Provide input to ensure Phase 2 & 3 trial designs to meet payers’ requirements.

  • Where needed lead market access advisory boards & research to inform international strategy

  • Proactively provide UK & Irish specific data for inclusion in the global value dossier & health economic models

Required Experience:


  • Deep understanding of the biopharmaceutical arena in orphan/specialty therapeutics.

  • Strong recent track-record in Market Access, HEOR and/or Pricing and reimbursement experience within UK/Ireland.

  • Personal leadership and engagement in the development of HTA dossiers & health economic models.

  • Detailed knowledge & working relationships with National and Local Commissioning and funding process for England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland ideally with medicines in the specialist areas gained from a role in the Pharmaceutical industry.

• P&R work experience within the pharmaceutical/biotech industry preferred.

• Significant experience in health outcomes areas; including health economics, observational studies.

• Experience in the hepatology therapy area highly preferred.

  • Commercial leadership experience is essential.

  • Demonstrated ability to change payer perception of a market and in particular to establish unmet needs and the use of surrogate endpoints.

  • Demonstrated success in an entrepreneurial commercial environment.

  • Proven track record in operating at a senior executive level and influencing without line management authority.

  • Experience in public policy and external communication.

  • Proven ability of successfully managing complexity across multi-functional reports and building strong relationships.

  • Well-developed analytical and strategic skills with an entrepreneurial insight and a pragmatic approach.

  • A strong business orientation and the ability to view issues from multiple functional perspectives, whilst managing organizational ambiguity.

  • Experience of working in an internationally diverse environment.

  • Credible ability to network and lead with gravitas in the respective health services; to be credible with senior payers and health system leaders.

  • The courage to challenge accepted trends.


  • Successful candidates will be degree educated (undergraduate degree required, MBA and/or post graduate preferred) with relevant Market Access and Health Technology Appraisal experience.\
