Senior Business Manager, Mid-Market (Acquisition Field)

The role holder is responsible for new business sales within a defined segment (target company size and geographical territory) within the UK Business Market. They will generate leads and sell new connections, products and services to achieve revenues in line with business objectives and sales targets.


We have around 1.2 million customers and serve over half the FTSE 350. Our customers range from big household names, government departments and public service organisations right through to small businesses and new start-ups. We cover both the communications and IT services markets. Overall we’re focused on four main product markets: Fixed Voice; Mobility; Fibre and connectivity; networked IT services provided over the biggest UK network in both fixed and mobile communications. We also provide network IT services to corporate and public sector organisations in the Republic of Ireland.

Our Wholesale business helps communications providers (CPs) and other organisations provide fixed or mobile phone services. Our ventures provide mass-market services like directory enquiries and payphones, and enterprise services including Fleet Solutions and BT Redcare. We also offer specialist enterprise services to our Internet of Things customers.

What you'll be doing

  • To achieve set monthly targets as determined by the company in a profitable, easy to do business way.

  • Be responsible for identifying, developing and closing sales through sustained prospecting and activity within the UK Business Market.

  • Generation of individual own leads to maintain a great pipeline of potential business.

  • Fully understand the business, motivations, buying and decision making process of the prospects as well as developing effective relationships with key contacts in the accounts.

  • Provide accurate detailed monthly and quarterly forecast and ensure information on relevant databases is kept up to date.

  • Understand and sell the whole product portfolio, including voice, data and new customer solutions as appropriate to customer needs.

  • Maintain a high awareness and knowledge of the medium market, including industry, competitors, technology, telecoms and internal activities to ensure that all business opportunities are identified, considered and implemented appropriately.

  • Interface with other internal departments (e.g. customer services) as required ensuring that customer issues are resolved to their satisfaction.

  • Provide a professional handover of accounts as necessary on a timely basis.

  • Maintain professional customer liaison and ensure the ethics of Best Advice are followed at all times.

  • Operate within published commercial and contractual guidelines, making effective use of escalation routes.

  • Act as an ambassador for BT both in the external market and within internal stakeholders, demonstrating best in class sales behaviour and delivery of excellent customer experience results.

  • Go above and beyond business targets for value added service revenues and customer satisfaction.

  • Comply with all elements of the corporate sales charter, and with all company policies and procedures.

  • Creating and selling the value proposition to achieve profitable new business - making the transition from volume to value to profit.

We'll also need to see these on your CV

  • Have sound experience of direct sales in B2B corporate market, with a focus on new business acquisition.

  • A Proven track record of driving and delivering sales results within the corporate marketplace.

  • Experience in mobile and/or fixed line sales.

  • Know how to develop & maintain a network of contacts and build relationships at all levels.

  • Broad commercial and financial acumen and awareness of issues involved in negotiating contracts.

  • Show genuine team spirit and be ready to support your colleagues.

  • See the bigger picture and embrace wider business change.

  • Ideally, a minimum of 2 years highly successful direct sales experience in a business to business corporate marketplace in a role that is primarily focused on new business acquisition.

  • An influential and highly effective communicator & negotiator who can negotiate in a logical and constructive way.

  • A team player able to work and support colleagues across a multi-national organisation.

  • A willingness to accept change and the ability to maintain effectiveness in a changing environment with ability to 'see the bigger picture'.

  • Mobile telecoms experience.

  • Knowledge of the B2B Business Market, market trends, and competitor activity.

  • Clear understanding of customer requirements and ability to focus on the customer to ensure customer needs are effectively met.
