Trinity Health Director Nursing and Clinical Labor Operations in Livonia, Michigan

POSITION PURPOSE

Develops system-wide strategies and leads innovative system-wide initiatives to achieve implementation of operational benefits in nursing and clinical labor resources. Develops policies, procedures, and standard practices for operational performance improvement initiatives in nursing and clinical labor, and deploys them uniformly across the system. Oversees system-wide nursing and clinical labor initiatives in an ongoing approach to improve quality and safety, enhance service, productivity, and reduce costs through the alignment of people, process, and technology.

Provides leadership in the areas of nursing and clinical labor issue identification and analysis, collaborates as a change leader with System Office and Regional Health Ministry leaders in translating nursing and clinical labor issues, goals and objectives into practical and integrated solutions and services that ensure optimum clinical quality and operational performance. Shares accountability with other System Office, Regional Health Ministry and Functional Service Organization leaders for nursing and clinical labor performance and productivity across Trinity Health. Conducts work from both a strategic perspective at the System Office and Functional Service Organization and a tactical perspective at the Regional Health Ministries. Acts as System Office liaison to specifically assigned Regional Health Ministries, Functional Service Organizations or Trinity Health initiatives. Position functions at multiple levels in the organization, including single department, interdepartmental, hospital wide and corporate wide.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Knows, understands, incorporates and demonstrates the mission, vision and values of Trinity Health in leadership behaviors, practices and decisions.

Directs the Leadership Team in the identification of nursing and clinical labor performance improvement opportunities for Trinity Health and specific Regional Health Ministries (RHMs) from identification and analyses of opportunities through implementation and evaluation. Develops short and long-term strategies that include initiation, development, and implementation of tools, products and services that improve nursing and clinical labor operational performance.

Role models and works collaboratively with support team members including change leadership, process excellence, project management, clinical analytics, and external experts to assure that all collaborate effectively and efficiently. Demonstrates the attributes of a servant leader, while assuring that relevant nursing and clinical labor performance targets are supported and achieved.

Oversees and leads the handling of multiple projects/assignments and their associated analytics simultaneously and adapts to frequent changes in priorities.

Drives improved nursing and clinical labor productivity; establishes nursing and clinical labor productivity targets and other metrics that are used to define performance standards for RHMs in collaboration with the Workforce Management Team. Contributes to the development of financial targets for nursing and clinical labor through finance team interactions.

Partners with RHMs on performance improvement/turnaround engagements/initiatives and nursing and clinical workforce stabilization.

Utilizes Lean, Six Sigma, Change Leadership, PDCA and other quality improvement tools to advance collaborative work in for nursing and clinical labor performance.

Ensures understanding by executives and management of the viability and use of appropriate performance improvement methods, resources and tools and oversees the development of clinical policies, standards, protocols and metrics that ensure provided products or services are tailored, responsive, tracked, enhanced, deliver high value and teach executives and their employees how to improve performance and solve business problems within their organizations. Develops and implements formal training and coaching programs as needed to educate on clinical labor cost-benefit analyses, facility planning, and other operational improvement methods/tools.

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws/regulations; the Trinity Health Integrity and Compliance Program and Code of Conduct; as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must possess a thorough understanding of the theory and application of performance improvement processes and methodologies as well as nursing and clinical operations usually obtained through completion of a Master’s degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration, Business Administration or a related field with a minimum of seven (7) years of experience leading transformation efforts. Must have at least five (5) years of experience in a healthcare leadership or a line management role. Experience in a role of a Nurse Manager, Director of Nursing, or a CNO is preferred. Understanding of hospital/health system operations/environment and associated quality and business challenges and opportunities required.

Certification as a Six Sigma Black Belt and/or LEAN Certification preferred. Proven track record of effectively consulting with/coaching business executives/entities in performance improvement initiatives and in designing and implementing organizational capability interventions in large/complex organizations.

Demonstrated ability and skill in identifying performance gaps. Experience developing applicable statistical, financial and business plans and models. Knowledge of due diligence, capital financing, physician/provider relationships, clinical quality issues and requirements and governing applicable federal/state laws and regulations.

Possesses strong data and financial analysis skills in order to understand and articulate applicable benefits and impact of various options and strategies. Advanced excel knowledge . Comfortable with data and metrics.

Must possess well-developed project leadership and management experience to lead and manage independently. Ability to conceptualize well in unstructured, ambiguous, fast-paced and dynamic environments.

Must have demonstrated ability to effectively lead and manage teams and people through influence and without direct reporting relationships.

Must possess strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills with ability to effectively present advisory, persuasive and authoritative recommendations to all levels of management. Demonstrated interpersonal and partnering skills to act as a leader and advisor in highly complex, time-sensitive and stressful turnaround situations. Demonstrated skill in coaching, collaborating, inspiring and building confidence in others to forge alliances and trust from diverse and/or opposing groups.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to adapt to frequently changing work priorities, and be able to prioritize and balance the requirements of working concurrently for multiple senior executives via varied projects, initiatives and assignments.

Must be able to travel to the various Trinity Health entities/sites, at times, can be up to 40% of work schedule.
