UnitedHealth Group Senior Healthcare Economics Consultant – Las Vegas, NV, Salt Lake City, UT preferred in Las Vegas, Nevada

Positions in this function research and investigate key business problems through quantitative analyses of utilization and healthcare costs data. Provides management with statistical findings and conclusions. Identifies potential areas for medical cost improvements and alternative pricing strategies. Provides data in support of actuarial, financial and utilization analyses.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for affordability including identifying trends and opportunities in healthcare spend and collaborating with functional leaders to implement initiatives

  • Analyze and interpret various forms of utilization and healthcare cost data (i.e. utilization, unit cost, year over year, benchmarking) to identify potential areas for medical cost improvements

  • Identify clear and compelling contributing factors and root causes for excessive health care expenditures

  • Present findings and collaborate with business partners (i.e. Medical Management, Pharmacy, Provider Relations, Operations, National HCE Affordability team, etc.) to identify and implement actionable initiatives

  • Research and understand national affordability initiatives and evaluate for feasibility in the Utah and Nevada markets

  • Quantify initiative savings

  • Act as a company thought

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience

  • 3+ years of health care experience, including understanding of healthcare claims data and coding (i.e. Professional vs. Facility, Procedure Codes, Diagnosis Codes)

  • 1+ years of experience working with relational databases

  • An advanced level of proficiency working with MS Excel including formulas, calculations, charts, graphs, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Intermediate level proficiency with SQL, SAS and/or other statistical programs

  • Proficient in the application of advanced statistics to evaluate economic, clinical and humanistic outcomes

  • Ability to present complex ideas to key leaders

  • Ability to translate highly complex concepts in ways that can be understood by a variety of audiences

  • Ability to direct cross functional teams
