Communications Manager - DIY and Virtual
Manages communications programs and materials for H&R Block’s key external audiences and stakeholders. This includes developing and implementing communications strategies and tactics that support company strategic and organizational initiatives contributing to the overall growth and success of H&R Block.
Executes effective communications campaigns through a variety of vehicles and approaches to support, protect and reinforce the company’s brand and reputation, strategic objectives, products and services, and competitive position. Supports the DIY and Virtual business unit objectives through measurable PR programs.
Provides input on overall strategy and tone for key flagship communications targeting H&R Block external audiences and helping to define content. Manages and executes proactive media relations strategies and responds to inquiries, crisis situations and issues to ensure minimal harm comes to the company reputation.
What you'll do...
Develops, manages and implements communications programs that support DIY and Virtual business initiatives. Examples may include materials for internal cascading, important news and information, writing engaging press releases, tax tips, pitches, standby statements, ANR and SMT content, and backgrounders for use in outreach and response to local and national media.
Manages the efforts of agencies, independent contractors and/or consultants to ensure that communications are implemented in the most creative, efficient and cost-effective manner utilizing leading edge technology and techniques to support the business goals and objectives.
Keeps up to date with emerging media trends and nontraditional media channels and updates media and public strategy accordingly.
Monitors, routes and/or responds to general media inquiries through our media desk.
Develops the messages, content, creative approach, and direction of communication vehicles -- whether print, video, social or electronic media – to deliver key messages. Identifies and manages the production of materials ensuring that each project is completed on time and within budget.
Develops and implements programs in specific support of Business Unit managers and in coordination with Marketing. Helps direct responses to crisis situations and monitors and measures effectiveness of communications programs and activities to apply learnings to future programs.
Works with communications leadership to identify need and develop communications for executives and business unit leaders that is impactful, clear, direct, consistent and motivational, as needed to support business objectives.
May implement research or surveys concerning the need for communications and the success of communications initiatives to ensure best practices and acceptance of communications strategies and vehicles. Utilizes results to shape and improve future communication programs.
Consistently collaborates with all other communications to ensure messages are aligned across entire enterprise. Is proactive in reaching out to coordinate with others, both within and outside the department, and demonstrates effective teamwork.
May serve as a spokesperson to the media on behalf of the company, and maintains strong professional relationships with print, trade broadcast and online business, consumer, tax and financial media.
Provides communications counsel and support to H&R Block leadership, including corporate and field.
What you’ll bring to the role…
Three years of experience managing and/or directing external communications with a public corporation.
A minimum of five years of experience in a corporate communications department.
Prior experience with a public relations firm or broadcast/print media.
Extensive creative writing experience, including feature articles, speeches, intranet writing and press materials.
Provides input on overall strategy and tone for key flagship communications targeting H&R Block external audiences and helping to define content.
Manages and executes proactive media relations strategies and responds to inquiries, crisis situations and issues to ensure minimal harm comes to the company reputation.
