Job Description:

H&R Block , the world’s leader in tax preparation services, is looking for an Associate Product Manager – States to join the DIY Tax Products & Services team . This position is located at our corporate headquarters, in the premier downtown Power & Light District of Kansas City, where everything is either steps or a streetcar ride away.   • This product manager will be focused on evolving the experience for our core digital tax product by deeply understanding our users to better serve their needs and guide expansion of our product line. You will be part of a team that believes in working fast, being accountable, and learning from mistakes.

What you’ll do…

  • Live and breathe the voice of the customer, understanding what makes our users unique, and drive a plan for how we can make their lives better through our product suite.

  • Understand and evaluate core customer journeys end to end for customers that use our State tax prep products and make recommendations on how to improve the experiences.

  • Help create and maintain a vision and executable roadmap for DIY’s core product growth strategy by deeply understanding the needs of our customers.

  • Recommend expansion of product line by evaluating customers’ jobs to be done

  • Work closely with leadership team to meet or exceed goals focused on client and revenue growth and conversion improvements.

  • Partner with internal state tax teams to ensure product is compliant and accurate.

  • Be a strong communicator and customer advocate.

  • Understand the steps to identifying impacted processes and people to see a feature from idea to implementation

  • Understand how to write and create clear user stories and acceptance criteria

  • Understand how to balance passion with responsibility to clients and the business and how that has an influence on feature prioritization

Design thinking:

  • Learn how to engage with design and content teams to share your vision and a high-level idea of an experience

  • Understand how a feature fits into the overall picture and spans across all channels from mobile to desktop

  • Identify moments where you can create delight

  • Understand how design thinking is a part of our team culture/process


  • Understand the elements of a business story: identifying a problem, highlighting possible solutions, identifying risks and their mitigations, presenting a solution and asking for resources in a concise and coherent way via deck and talk track

  • Know when to use various communication channels, including emails, face-to-face conversations and formal presentations

  • Read the room and know your audience so you can adapt your style based on how the information will be best received by that group of people

  • Present complex information in an understandable way

What you’ll bring to the role…

  • Must have a clear understanding of the software development lifecycle

  • Knowledge of project management tools (Jira, Trello, ADO, AHA)

  • Strong time management skills

  • Ability to collect and seek out quantitative product data and translate into tangible projects and results

  • Ability to coordinate among stakeholders and teams while building successful relationships across the organization
