DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides effective maintenance and mechanical service for wastewater utility services. Utilizes troubleshooting abilities to assist in solving utility problems. Investigates and responds to complaints from the general public. Repairs and maintains wastewater treatment facilities and pump stations and analyzes wastewater samples to ensure wastewater quality. Assists with rodding, cleaning and televising sewer lines. Requesting Commercial Drivers License holders to Uses trucks and equipment to transport equipment, tools and materials to work locations. May operate heavy equipment such as a backhoe, roll back truck, dump truck or pump. Observes and follows safety regulations. Acts as lead worker on team, makes repair decisions, inspects work sites and assists in training new personnel. Prepares completed work orders and reports. Transports wastewater samples and critical cleaning of glassware may also be required. Other duties as assigned.
The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.
Requires a High School diploma or a GED certificate.
Six (6) months of experience as a Laborer or Utility Worker or other related work is required.
A valid Driver's License is required and Compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
Preference will be given to applicants with COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE (CDL) holders.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

However, the department may administer a skill assessment evaluation.
