The Paralegal – Tort Litigation & Claims uses specialized legal knowledge of litigation rules and procedures to assist in management and/or handling of legal matters for the Litigation practice group.
Responsibilities may include:
Investigating facts underlying claims and litigation disputes, preparing, pleadings and correspondence, working with outside counsel, experts and fact witnesses, determining types of information/documents needed, and requesting and reviewing relevant documents including service agreements/contracts
Managing discovery for multiple litigation matters, including coordinating, developing, and preparing responsive documents
Managing the day to day activity, including obtaining and entering Medicare data, for a large toxic tort NORM docket with multiple plaintiffs and a joint defense group
Performing necessary legal research and analysis for claims, litigation matters, and other disputes, including internal research of assets
Preparing written memoranda and/or other communications regarding recommended case preparation, handling, indemnification, and strategy
Reviewing legal documents, such as briefs, pleadings, and affidavits for ultimate approval by in-house attorneys
Managing the implementation and in some situations the coordination and assigning of tasks to legal support staff with respect to file maintenance, case management plan updating, docket calendaring, check processing, and routine communications with clients, court clerks, outside counsel, and others
Preparing decision trees with input from outside and in-house counsel
Preparing budgets with input from outside counsel for review by in-house attorneys
Communicating with outside counsel, clients and others as necessary for handling of claims and litigation matters
Serving as a backup for in-house attorneys with respect to providing information and status on cases to outside counsel or clients
Legally authorized to work in the United States
Paralegal certificate or equivalent legal education
10 years of legal experience
Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts or Business from an accredited university
Thorough working knowledge of and strong hands-on experience in the litigation discovery process, both paper and electronic (including the updated Federal Rules of Discovery)
Experience in torts (including toxic torts such as NORM or asbestos) and the oil & gas industry
Experience in the insurance industry, particularly managing claims, or handling insurance defense matters
Experience with bankruptcy proofs of claim
Thorough working knowledge and hands-on experience in litigation generally
Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate with internal business clients and outside of the Company with opposing counsel, experts, witnesses and vendors, as well as support staff
Ability to work independently within broadly defined objectives without extensive supervision
Ability to learn quickly and apply COP policies, procedures, operations and industry practices
Comprehensive legal project management skills including analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills
Experience with decision tree risk analysis (TreeAge)
Ability to establish professional credibility with a variety of clients and management
Technical knowledge of and proficiency in Concordance, Relativity, Atlas and other litigation database applications
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
