Sierra Lobo, Inc. Mechanical Designer in Hampton, Virginia

Sierra Lobo, offers customers a full range of professional and technical capabilities, including Test and Evaluation, Systems Engineering, and Advanced Technologies. We also develop products and processes related to Cryogenic Fluid and Thermal Management Systems, Densified Propellant Management Systems, and Prototype Extreme Pressure and Temperature Systems. Our customers include the Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

This position is located on the CMOE contract located at NASA’s Langley Research Center.


The Mechanical Designer shall provide a range of skills as part of an integrated building services design team. The designer will be responsible for providing system design: calculations and other related design services including coordination with the designs of other disciplines (architectural and engineering / internal and external) under the guidance of more senior technical staff. The designer will take ownership of the completeness, accuracy and timeliness of the work assigned to you. Individuals in this position must demonstrate the ability to design complicated and involved projects while working in conjunction with a technical team.

• Prepare Process, HVAC, and Plumbing drawings detailing concepts and the finalized system designed.

• Assists senior engineer and/or senior designer in the on-going determination of project scheduling requirements, manpower requirements, and project budgets.

• Prepare mechanical system calculations, studies, construction cost estimates, specifications, and construction schedules.

• Select equipment and components for use in the building or process design.

• Coordinate work with engineers of other disciplines and architects.

While the majority of work is directly in support of LaRC, other industry partners and Government agencies may be supported at remote sites as directed by the Contracting Officer (CO). The Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering (CMOE) contract comprises of three major categories of work – operations, maintenance, and engineering (OME).

  • Technical or Associate Degree from an accredited technical institution or college in mechanical engineering/design.

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET accreditation) is preferred.

  • Ability to communicate thoughts and technical ideas well, both oral and in writing.

  • Attitude of taking independent initiative, exhibiting creative problem-solving, eagerness to learn, while remaining dedicated to teamwork required.

  • Knowledge of all aspects of mechanical systems, including related Codes and Standards defined by ASME, ASHRAE, and the International Code Council.

  • 8 years or more experience in a Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing design environment is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and communicate effectively to all key personnel, manage time efficiently, and produce correct designs within budgeted time.

  • Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD is mandatory.
