Job Description

Overall Purpose

Provide leadership to the Strategic Sourcing Specialist and support to the High Point site in the following ways: ensuring supply of quality material within specified cost parameters, setting standard costs, working with various departments/groups on cost savings initiatives, supporting development work, tech transfers, etc. Also responsible for hiring, performance reviews, goal setting, measuring objectives, teaching, coaching, training and workload prioritization.

Strategic Sourcing Specialist

SPECIFIC DUTIES: (with % of time for each task totaling 100%)

  • Manage the Strategic Sourcing Specialist to ensure continual sources of supply. Also ensure materials meet predetermined quality and cost parameters. (20%).

  • Ensure the site is fully supported and internal client requests are satisfied. (20%)

  • Work closely with Corporate Procurement and provide timely and accurate responses to data requests and analysis (15%)

  • Seek opportunities to negotiate price decreases and identify and quantify opportunities for cost savings (materials, vendor managed inventory, freight, etc). Participate on NA and global commodity spend teams (10%)

  • Supervise Strategic Sourcing Specialists, assuring that all work is in line with regulations, guidelines, and objectives, and associates meet their full potential. (10%)

  • Prepare material quotations for future business opportunities. (5%)

  • Negotiate and /or oversee contracts that cover several years and represent purchasing commitments for millions of dollars. (5%)

  • Assist the buyer/planners in resolving supplier/supply issues. (5%)

  • Track the monthly purchasing goals: MPV, supplier performance and keep the goals on track (5%)

  • Oversee the development of annual budget/standard costs for direct materials which includes running reports, develop freight and material cost projections. (3%)

  • Write or revise SOP’s & WIs as needed(2%)

Key Job Challenges: Provide leadership in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to work well on teams and independently, especially in uncertainty and ambiguity. Able to hit assigned deadlines. Must provide accurate budget forecasts and cost savings reporting. Must be able to balance site and corporate projects, requests for data, analysis and reporting.


A. Must haves:

  • BS/BA required preferably with a business or technical emphasis Business Administration or related discipline. MS/MBA preferred

  • Minimum 10 years of purchasing experience in related field within a manufacturing / pharmaceutical environment

  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory or leadership demonstration

  • Certification highly preferred (CPM)

  • Strong computer skills (SAP, Microsoft Word and Excel etc)

  • Must be well-organized and able to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Detail oriented, able to prioritize multiple tasks

  • Possess excellent interpersonal, analytical/problem solving, and communication skills (both oral and written)

  • Highly proficient in negotiations,business conduct and business law.

  • Proficiency with the English language

B. Wants:

  • Science/Business related education and related purchasing experience

  • Knowledgeable of commodity markets, price fluctuations and effect on material purchases

  • Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices

  • Good management skills


Physical Effort:

Work requires minimal physical exertion. Generally, this position must sit and use the keyboard and computer for extended to constant periods of time.

Physical Environment:

Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and of short duration

Sensory Attention:

Regular need to attend to and decipher sensory input that requires diligence and attention to interpret effectively. This is typically because data is technical, legal or financial in nature.

Mental Stress:

There is frequent pressure to meet deadlines, resolve quality issues, expedite materials to meet production schedules, managing people, handling of multiple projects at the same time, pressure to drive down costs to meet goals.
