The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the creation of complex cad models, assemblies, and prints, of various mechanical, electrical & electro-mechanical components including thermoform & injection molded plastic, sheet metal, wiring & electrical, plumbing, motors, valves, refrigeration components, etc., using Pro-E. A sound understanding of GD&T, ability to perform tolerance stack ups and knowledge of plastic mold design is a must. This person will coordinate work with many cross functional groups including: model shop activities, tooling vendors, manufacturing, industrial design and procurement. He/she must be detail oriented, able to think critically & independently, highly motivated and be a team player. Some minor travel may be required
Key Job Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility is to work within the NPD Engineering Department to ensure engineering & manufacturability design requirements are incorporated to the design.
Confer with engineers to insure that design specifications & deliverables are understood. Use customer and company standards, specifications, and mathematical formulas to develop designs of undefined details.
Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics.
Proficiently use & manage a ProE workstation to create complex cad models & assemblies for new product designs. Designs should be manufacturable (proper manufacturing processes, hardware, bend radii, secondary operations, assembly, etc), moldable (wall stock consideration, strength, material selection, drafts, rounds, etc), and cost effective.
Create complex 2-D detailed drawings with integrated Bill of Materials (BOM's) from models, and proper dimensioning and tolerance relative to the type of part designed (Sheetmetal, machined, injection molded, thermoformed, etc). Proactively drive print reviews.
Examine, formulate recommendations and present various design alternatives to the assigned Engineer. Work with engineers to demonstrate design adherence to good design practices and other identified objectives.
Participate in and drive pilot builds. Identify & quickly resolve issues discovered during pilot builds. Effectively communicate needs and results.
Work with model shop to produce prototype components.
Work with procurement and suppliers as needed to communicate design requirements and address tooling needs.
Modify complex three dimensional models and two dimensional drawings and create Engineering Change Notices (ECN's) in accordance with company standards.
Two year post secondary school education, with 4+ years as a Mechanical Designer in working in a Product Design Engineering environment with ProE. Experience transitioning designs from Engineering to manufacturing.
Role requires some level of technical background in a broad range of fields including: mechanical, mechanisms, electromechanical, fabrication, manufacturing, refrigeration, motors, and pumps.
Ability to work effectively in a fast paced design/manufacturing environment and adapt quickly to changes.
Must possess solid understanding of manufacturing & machining processes.
Pro-E Modeling 6000hrs experience with sound knowledge and abilities with sheet metal, surfacing, assembly, Pro/Cable, etc.
Solid understanding of drafting fundamentals and experience with GD&T
Ability to perform tolerance stack-up analyses
Ability to use Mechanical or other FEA tool, and understand the results
