State of Georgia Manager 1, Environmental Protection in Fulton, Georgia
This position is located in the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) – Watershed Protection Branch – Watershed Planning & Monitoring Program – Ambient Monitoring Unit – North. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a unit of eight Environmental Scientists and two Environmental Technicians and for overseeing the monitoring conducted by field staff located in the Atlanta and Cartersville Offices. The Unit conducts water quality and biological monitoring of rivers, streams, and lakes in North Georgia. This work is required by the Watershed Protection Branch’s 106 PPG agreement with the EPA. Data collected is used to determine if waters of the State are meeting their designated uses and the associated water quality criteria. This position is responsible for: developing the annual monitoring plan, conducting quality control of the data collected, and inputting the data into the GOMAS; coordinating all monitoring requests and logistics, including scheduling and equipment acquisition; performing grant management, budget oversight, and leading Georgia EPD’s participation in the National Aquatic Resource Surveys; coordinating DNR’s fish tissue monitoring programs; and for the annual publication of Georgia’s fish consumption advisories.
Degree or coursework in aquatic ecology, limnology, hydrology, and/or watershed science
Familiarity with the Clean Water Act and Georgia’s Rules and Regulations for Water Quality Control
Knowledge of and/or experience conducting water quality monitoring of surface and ground water
Familiarity with Georgia EPD water quality and biological monitoring methodology
Knowledge of and/or experience conducting instream field surveys
Experience with analyzing and managing physical, chemical, and biological data collected in aquatic environments
Proficient with GIS and Microsoft Office (especially data management and manipulation in Excel)

Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, geology, engineering (agricultural, chemical, civil, environmental, mechanical or sanitary) or a related field from an accredited college or university AND Four years of professional experience in environmental enforcement, environmental health, environmental monitoring, environmental protection or environmental research. Note: An equivalent combination of education and job specific experience that provided the knowledge, experience and competencies required to successfully perform the job at the level listed may be substituted on a year-over-year basis for a maximum of Two years non-managerial/supervisory experience.
