Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and exceptional biotechnology or pharmaceutical translational scientist to support ongoing and new efforts focused on biomarker development in the areas of chronic progressive fibrotic diseases such as NASH fibrosis and rare diseases resulting in liver fibrosis and dysfunction.

Gilead Sciences is a world leader in liver disease research having developed small molecule compounds that have revolutionized the treatment of HCV and HBV. Over the last 5 years, Gilead has significantly broadened its scope to encompass unmet medical needs in chronic fibrotic diseases. Gilead has developed a pipeline of investigational compounds that are currently in late-stage clinical trials for NASH and continues to expand this pipeline.

This position is within a collaborative and dynamic biomarker research department with an established, integrated research effort in this area. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing biomarker and diagnostic strategies for research programs transitioning into clinical trials as well as early and late stage clinical programs. This position is a high-impact opportunity to support the growth of the fibrosis pipeline.

Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities:

  • Reports to the Biomarker Sciences Lead for the Liver DiseasesTherapy Area.

  • Lead the development of biomarker and diagnostic strategy for Liver Fibrosis Programs and lead cross-functional Biomarker Team(s) to oversee the delivery of biomarker and diagnostic strategies.

  • Direct the development, outsourcing and validation of clinically applicable biomarker assays (including pharmacodynamic, predictive, prognostic, disease monitoring, safety and other biomarkers) and design, implement and oversee biomarker and diagnostic testing and data analysis/interpretation

  • Identify, establish and oversee external collaborations with key opinion leaders/CROs to advance understanding of pathway specific prognostic biomarkers in primary human samples, provide expertise to research and development teams to ensure access to state of the art biomarker assay technologies, and evaluating their scientific basis and clinical applicability.

  • Collaborate with Research Biology, Clincal Research and Biostatistics for synergy in developing biomarker strategies and translational approaches. It is expected that the individual will maintain knowledge of scientific advances and competitive activity from literature, scientific meetings and external contacts.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent degree and at least 3+ years of relevant post graduate experience inclusive of either post-doctoral work or employment in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry. The candidate will have experience in the use and application of modern techniques to enable biomarker research including evaluation of intracellular signaling networks, and an understanding of metabolism and metabolic dysfunction and/or experience with rare diseases such as Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. Direct experience in the investigation of progressive fibrotic diseases, disease related pathways, and potential biomarkers of fibrosis, is highly desired. Experience with clinical stage programs for Type 2 Diabetes or related conditions is desirable but not essential.

The candidate will also have experience with the use of a wide range of platforms encompassing genomics, gene expression, multiplexed protein detection, metabolomics, or other related emerging platforms. This individual will have demonstrable skills and experience in hypothesis-driven biological/translational research and biomarker development. The ability and desire to work in a cross-functional and team-based environment is a key required attribute.
