Job Description

Specific Responsibilities and Skills

The Sr. Director, IT R&D / PDM Business Solutions Architect is accountable for developing business-enabling technology solutions, including analytics, that support Research, Development and Manufacturing-specific capabilities and needs (from Research to Corporate Quality to Process Development to Biologics Manufacturing). This role applies a structured business solution architecture approach and methodology for capturing the key views of the business unit, in collaboration with our business engagement leaders, within the context of the enterprise. Maintains expertise in the direction of the business functions in partnership with business engagement, to identify challenges and associated plans to advance business capabilities. Effective partnership and teamwork with business partners, their IT teams and all other Gilead IT service teams is a key success factor. This role reports directly to the Senior Director of R&D/PDM IT.

Essential Duties and Job Functions

This role will be accountable for, but not limited to, the following key responsibilities:

Business Partnership

  • In collaboration with Business Engagement Leads, develop and sustain effective relationships and partnerships with key Research, Development and Manufacturing stakeholders, providing insights and advice on opportunities to leverage technology for business outcomes, and pulling in key stakeholders into solution discussions and plans as appropriate.

Business Analysis

  • Develop deep and broad Research, Development and Manufacturing business, functional and domain knowledge to enhance IT’s business knowledge base.

  • Ensure effective business analysis and requirements planning for all Research, Development and Manufacturing IT solution development.

  • Ensure effective consultation with Research, Development and Manufacturing business partners in exploring and applying innovative outside-in solution ideas to address business opportunities and challenges.

  • Perform matrix leadership and hold accountability for business gap analysis, process mapping and requirement gathering and definition.

Portfolio and Delivery Planning

  • Partner effectively with the Enterprise Project Management Office (ePMO) in prioritizing Research, Development and Manufacturing business-specific demand as part of portfolio planning for projects.

  • Develop and maintain a three-year roadmap strategy for Research, Development and Manufacturing with key business leaders/ stakeholders.

  • Develop, prioritize with business leadership, and deliver IT Advisory Council (ITAC) approved “roadmap” technology investments to enable the desired Research, Development and Manufacturing capabilities.

  • Participate in annual and off-cycle project intake and planning.

  • Work with IT Shared Services (e.g. Oracle EBS, Information Management, Content Management, Workflow Management, Infrastructure, and Quality) to ensure interfaces and integration points are fully planned and coordinated properly.

Solution Architecture and Design

  • Ensure the proper architecture and design of business-enabling solutions that are consistent with the Gilead IT Architecture Review Board (ARB) standards, principles and design guidelines.

  • Partner effectively with other Solution Delivery IT leaders to identify potential shared platform solutions that can be leveraged across other business areas to minimize redundant solutions.

  • Develop business enablement & solution roadmaps.

  • Partner with enterprise architecture to conceptualize solution architectures adhering to Architecture Directions and Standards while addressing business strategies, business capability requirements, business processes. Contributes to enterprise architecture by modeling and mapping business processes, capabilities and enterprise information.

  • Perform process development and mapping from Research to Release.

  • Build and maintain an integrated view of the system landscape to support future business intelligence and analytics (e.g. regulatory filings, inspection readiness, etc.).

Solution Development and Support

  • Drive the evaluation of “ideas” to bring tangible, actionable solutions.

  • Solve for business capability gaps, support development of business cases and weave solution execution plans into technology roadmaps, with appropriate linkages to other/related systems and areas.

  • Ensure that all Business IT Roadmaps are developed in compliance with Gilead’s Enterprise Project Management Office (ePMO) standards & processes and Quality, Security and Compliance (QSC) rules and policies.

  • Provide input to the enterprise architecture to guide the enterprise toward a target state as it relates to supported line of business.

  • Serve as a change agent to drive process and system capability improvements across Research, Development and Manufacturing, partnering with IT Cross-Functional Teams including Infrastructure Services, Quality, ePMO & Architecture, and Information Management.

  • Drive efficiency gains and quality improvements

General Leadership and Management

  • Support the IT Senior Director of R&D/PDM IT in leading and managing an effective multi-disciplinary team of business savvy IT experts, and in contributing innovative thoughts to the Research, Development and Manufacturing IT vision.

  • Ensure effective leadership, teamwork and collaboration with other IT directors, managers and staff across IT to achieve a unified and responsive IT services approach to the Business.

  • Ensure proper inspection readiness and compliance in all aspects of solution delivery.

  • Lead continuous improvements to drive IT effectiveness with the Business and IT.

  • Manage internal personnel, external partners and service providers where applicable.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Minimum of 12+ years of experience (with a Bachelor degree, or a minimum of 10+ years of experience with an advanced degree) in an IT leadership and Account Management role in the Pharmaceutical/Biotech industry, with a focus in Research, Development and Manufacturing.

  • Minimum of five years of experience working as a Business Solution Architect in the Pharmaceutical industry, soliciting and defining requirements and business capabilities, and conducting process mapping.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience at the intersection of strategy, architecture and innovation, applying advanced technologies to large and/or complex business problems.

  • Working experience and knowledge of end-to-end IT software and systems solution delivery from idea conception, design, development and/or configuration, and transition into production support and maintenance.

  • Experience with all disciplines of architecture (information, applications, solutions, enterprise).

  • Knowledge and experience working with core IT technologies including the Oracle suite of products focused on Supply Chain and Manufacturing, Sparta Trackwise, Eduneering ComplianceWire, Werum MES, and virtual computing, as well as other technologies supporting clinical supplies manufacturing, asset management and quality-focused activities (e.g. deviations, CAPAs and investigations).

  • Knowledge and understanding of six sigma required.

  • Working experience and knowledge in IT solution delivery using delivery approaches besides in-house development via managed services providers.

  • Working knowledge of various solution delivery methodologies – waterfall, agile, hybrid methods, etc.

  • Working knowledge of applied IT architecture in the effective design of business-enabling solutions.

  • Solid understanding of IT governance, inspection, compliance and regulatory requirements for validated systems.

  • Demonstrated relationship savvy in building effective trusted advisor relationships with business partners and IT alike using effective relationship-building, negotiation, mediation and influencing skills.

  • Ability to lead and manage under conditions of ambiguity and uncertainty.

  • Proven organizational savvy in working across organizational boundaries and reporting lines - ability to work in a matrix environment as required.

  • Demonstrated discipline, analytical skills, problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

  • Independent, self-motivated, self-managing, proactive and responsive with a bias for action and results.
