Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated experienced individual to join the Biomarker Sciences Department to take the lead in genomic-based biomarker assay development, qualification, and assay transfer to support clinical programs in all therapeutic areas at Gilead. This individual can be located either at Foster City or Seattle.


The Biomarker Sciences department is seeking an experienced scientist for the Biomarker Assay Technologies laboratory group, assuming responsibility for development, qualification and implementation of genomic-based biomarker assays.

The Biomarker Assay Technologies group has laboratories in Foster City and Seattle and serves the needs of the Biomarker Sciences department for assay development, transfer and monitoring across protein and nucleic acid based assays, including ELISA, flow cytometry and transcript-measurement technologies. Biomarker Sciences is responsible for biomarker work across all therapeutic areas at Gilead from preclinical assessment throughout all phases of clinical development and commercialization (when necessary). The individual will provide genomics expertise to ensure access to state of the art thinking on appropriate biomarker and diagnostic technologies, evaluate their scientific basis and clinical applicability, the validation status and any technical issues related to the proposed biomarker and/or diagnostic assays. Gilead is a highly matrixed organization and the ability to work effectively across groups is a key attribute for this role.

Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities:

  • Independently plans and executes assigned experiments that support non-routine research activities and project goals.

  • Applies an advanced level of genomics understanding to project goals and methods.

  • Selects appropriate methods and techniques in performing experiments.

  • Designs new experiments to advance scientific knowledge of targets or pathways impacted by drug substances.

  • Recommends alternatives, researches new methods and techniques and may proactively seek out senior personnel to discuss potential solutions to problems.

  • May lead functional group meetings. Presents results of work, interprets data, and draws conclusions regarding presented material and nature of work.

  • Works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires comprehensive evaluation of many factors.

  • Acts as a resource for other employees within the department on genomics-based techniques.

  • Maintains high level of expertise through familiarity with scientific literature and applies appropriately to research projects.

  • Manages vendor relationships and outsourcing.

  • Uses strong communication skills (both verbal and technical) and interpersonal skills to communicate objectives and results.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

Applicants must have a MS, PhD or equivalent degree and 0+ years of relevant post graduate experience inclusive of either post-doctoral work or employment in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry. The candidate will have experience in the use and application of modern techniques to enable biomarker research including evaluation of intracellular signaling networks, and an understanding of basic biology and one of the relevant disease areas in Gilead (immunology, oncology, fibrosis, virology). The ideal candidate will have direct experience with a variety of genomics-based technologies (e.g. PCR, Next Generation Sequencing, epigenetics) and demonstrated capability in new method assay development, and the outsourcing, validation and trouble-shooting of clinically applicable biomarker assays. Experience with a broader range of platforms encompassing multiplexed protein detection or other related emerging platforms is also desirable. The ability and desire to work in a cross-functional and team-based environment is a key required attribute. The ability to communicate and scientifically engage individuals across a large breadth of levels and translate ideas and data into concise written communications is required.
